From the New York Times bestselling author of the Halo trilogy comes the start of a beautiful and powerful new series

After the loss of her mother, Chloe Kennedy starts seeing the ghosts that haunted her as a young girl again. Spending time at her grandmother's country estate in the south of England is her chance to get away from her grief and the spirits that haunt her. Until she meets a mysterious stranger...

Alexander Reade is 157 years dead, with secrets darker than the lake surrounding Grange Hall and a lifelike presence that draws Chloe more strongly than any ghost before. But the bond between them awakens the vengeful spirit of Alexander's past love, Isobel. And she will stop at nothing to destroy anyone who threatens to take him from her.

To stop Isobel, Chloe must push her developing abilities to their most dangerous limits, even if it means losing Alex forever...and giving the hungry dead a chance to claim her for their own.

Ghost House begins with the unexpected death of Chloe & Rory’s mother. This is where the family dynamics begin to take shape, bits of Chloe”s past comes to light, and where the decision by their over-grieving father is made. This is also the time that we meet the stern grandmother, that will eventually take her grandchildren to England, to be more precise to Grange Hall.

Chloe has a unique ability to see ghosts, although she learned at a young age from her mother to suppress this ability. The death of her mother and the move to Grange Hall is the catalyst to unlocking and trying to control her given abilities to communicate with the dead. In hind sight, I also see it as her very own secret connection that only she has with her deceased mother.

Upon arrival to Grange Hall, there is no anticipation-no happiness-not an ounce of excitement. Leaving home and their father at such a traumatic time was not what the kids needed or wanted. I did very much enjoy reading the description of the trip leading to Grange Hall, as well as the description of what it looked like. Grange Hall was in being made over to accommodate the grandmothers hotel business venture.

Grange Hall becomes the key to a very rich, sad, and disturbing history. The mystery of the place and why ghosts are still haunting the place, especially Alex and Isobel. Alex provided not only a strong character, but was instrumental in learning of history of the past of Grange Hall. While, it was up to Chloe to have the visions, and to also put puzzle pieces together- it was Alex that proved to be the trigger for Chloe’s abilities.

Isobel, was a terrifyingly cruel character. I found her to be fascinating, as I tried to figure out the mystery behind the obvious anger she had towards the living. There were times that you will hate her, but there are times where you will begin to pity her-even understand her. Such a strange statement considering how she treated people in life and in death.

When the reader first begins to read Ghost House, you must keep in mind that this is geared towards younger teens. I feel that this would be the reason for the simplicity of the storyline, the words chosen as dialogue, and the feelings that are expressed. As I read Ghost House it became very clear to me that while I enjoyed the story- I would have adored it if I were 12-14 years old! I was emerged in the book fully, just because I wanted to learn the mystery of how all things came to be the way they were. The story is gripping when it comes to that piece. I did have difficulty connecting with the fact that Chloe falls in love with Alex, and vice-versa. But then again at a younger age I would have devoured each detail, as I could easily become jealous of a love like the one they were sharing.

My favorite characters in Ghost House were not even the focal point of the novel, I enjoyed the ghost-hunting sisters tremendously. They had me giggling with the way they seemed to fumble around their “craft”. The other lesser character, the housekeeper, was another favorite. Her non-verbal angry at the whole world kid hating self, seemed to make me want to know her more. I knew that there must be a reason for her outlook on life. I was right- there was and I don’t blame her a bit!

When all the pieces of the puzzle came together at the end it was bitter-sweet. I found myself excited for the future of Chloe and her family, but yet saddened by all that had been lost. I would recommend this book to any teen that loves ghost stories with a bit of haunting romance. I am looking forward to seeing the next two installment in this series! ( )

Ghost House (The Ghost House Saga #1) by Alexandra Adornetto is such a great book, it just ripped my heart out so many times! Oh, I can't tell you how awesome this ghost story is. Scary, wonderful, romantic, haunting beautiful and sad. A fantasy I am so glad I picked up from the library. This is sooooo good, I would read it again and I never re-read books! Yes, that good. LOVED it. ( )

liked the premise of this book...a teen that can see ghosts...a haunted manor with tragic backstory....a star-crossed romance with handsome ghost... but be that as it may... my enjoyment was seriously hindered by the fact that I didn’t like, nor could I feel any compassion for the main character. Cloe was immature, self-centered. With her father grieving for the loss of his wife and can barely function, Chloe announces that he is unfair and not taking responsibility for his children. The father knows he can’t take proper care of his kids, so he sends them off to Grandma's house for a few weeks. But...dear Chloe is completely unsympathetic. Amid screaming fits and total disregard for anyone's feelings...we are suppose to think of her as a heroine??? I don't think so. Honestly...my favorite character in the story was the supposed villain...Isobel. Her story is so tragic it’s no wonder she went mad. It is a book intended for Young adult readers so maybe they see nothing wrong with this behavior. It earned the book 2.5 stars as far as I'm concerned. ( )

Ghost stories aren't my usual cup of tea because I scare easily, lol! But I wanted to read something different and the cover of this book immediately grabbed my attention.

This is the first book of the Ghost House saga. I have mixed feelings about this one though...On one hand the story is interesting enough that I finished it in one day.

However, I feel the writing needs more depth and insight. I question why the main character - Chloe, fell in love with Alex so quickly given that he is a ghost and their interactions weren't sufficient to warrant a romance. Same goes with Joe, why was he willing to be in harms way for Chloe when they clearly just met? Intriguing story for sure, but it lacks depth.

That being said, I'm curious to read the 2nd book - Ghost Hour to see what happens next and to find out if some of the unanswered questions in Ghost House will be addressed. ( )

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales

Quick & Dirty: This novel was easy to read, with an unfortunate case of insta-love that marred my appreciation.

Opening Sentence: I sensed the ghost before I saw her.

The Review:

In Ghost House, Chloe is moving in for the summer to her grandmother’s old mansion in Europe, far away from the Los Angeles hubbub of noise and people that Chloe has come to expect. She’s always had a power to see people that others cannot, people who have passed, but no one has believed her in the past. Except for her mother. Unfortunately, after her mother passes away, the fragile defenses Chloe had built up to keep the ghosts at bay are starting to crumble. The ghosts are coming back, more powerful than before. Moving to Grange Hall isn’t helping her dilemma.

There are ghosts here, as well, in more gruesome forms of death than Chloe has ever experienced. And there is a story holding these ghosts together, one Chloe is determined to discover. It all centers around Alexander Reade, the mysterious, attractive ghost that Chloe just may be falling for, even though it’s a relationship doomed to end. Vicious Isobel will stop at nothing to destroy Chloe and get back Alex, and through pieces of the puzzle that are revealed one after another, a story of their lives starts to form. Can Chloe defeat the strong, destructive ghost determined to end her? Or will she and the people she cares about be laid to ruins?

All over the place people were falling in love with Chloe. It was incredibly annoying. She wasn’t a horrible main character, but at the same time, I couldn’t detect that special quality everyone else wanted. She had a gift to see ghosts. Good for her. Why does that mean that guys are falling for her all over the place? Insta-love, the bane of my existence, and you can trust that it’s pretty instant in Ghost House. She’s smart, I guess, and seems sensible enough. (Except for that falling-for-a-ghost bit.) Her appearance isn’t mentioned often, but she’s pretty. She’s not amazingly funny or compassionate or courageous though. There isn’t any strong quality that makes her different than many other human beings. And yet after days, you see Joe start to love her. And after a couple days with Alex, he’s admitting the strange chemistry that he’s only felt once before, something that alludes…To love.

Okay, so Alex is cool and all that, and I get that he’s had 150 years to figure it all out, but he was too perfect a character to seem realistic. There’s this one time that Chloe freaks out over something that he does, but honestly, I agreed with his decision. Their relationship was the only thing flawed about Alex. There’s this whole he’s a ghost, thing. You can’t be in a relationship with a ghost. One, he’s invisible to everyone else. Two, he’s not a corporeal form, and though she can touch him sometimes, he still isn’t real. To conclude this short list, it can’t happen. Another of my complaints is that she was ready to have sex after they talked a few times, and I’m not even sure if they had kissed at that point. For some reason they could touch each other then, and Chloe was ready to go all the way. Thankfully the dead guy had more sense than her and shut it down.

I did a lot of complaining in this review, but I didn’t hate the book. I thought it was enjoyable and I didn’t have much trouble reading it. The writing style was simple, easy to sink into. The world that was created was somewhat flawed, but overall, the descriptions of Grange Hall and the ghost were well done. I squirmed a couple times at the gruesome images planted in my hand of bloated bodies and rotting teeth. There was quite the unexpected plot twist at the end of the book that makes me think it could have a sequel, though it also could standalone. The twist made me smile. It was so out of the blue! It’s just an easy read. If you want a little ghostly action and aren’t bothered by insta-love, this might be the book for you.

Notable Scene:

“Are you staying at Grange Hall?” I asked, wanting to deflect attention from myself.

“I suppose you could say that.” I waited for him to elaborate, until it was clear he wasn’t going to.

“I’m Chloe Kennedy,” I said awkwardly. He gave a slight bow.

“Pleased to make your acquaintance, Miss Kennedy. I’m Alexander Reade.”

FTC Advisory: Harlequin Teen provided me with a copy of Ghost House. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review. ( )
