Urban Outlaws is a very fast-paced story about a group of orphans who find each other and form a group to take money from criminals and give it to those in need. Each character has his/her own story, but we learn the most about Jack, who is the leader of the group and we see the story through his eyes. The Outlaws live together in an underground bunker from World War II that they have remodeled to fit their needs. Their little world is disrupted when they find a supercomputer called Proteus that is able to gather intel about everyone. The Outlaws accidentally "fix" the computer and now must find a way to destroy it. I would like to have known more of a back story for the supporting characters, but overall this is quite a good read. I'll be looking forward to the next book in the series, Blackout. ( )

Didn't finish. I think kids would like it but it was a little too improbable for me.

A group of abandoned kids play Robin Hood as they commit technological heists.

Jack and Charlie lead their group of five as they do random acts of kindness. They refuse to be greedy as they share the money they rescue from bad, rich people. They are technologically advanced. Jack is the planner and is a genius with computer code. Charlie is great at creating gadgets. Obi runs the ops from their underground bunker via the computer. Wren is their tiny thief who provides distractions. Slink is their dare-devil who can climb and break into anything. Their latest target leads them to Proteus, a computer that many say exists but no one has ever seen. Jack and Charlie are shocked. Unfortunately, the computer has a virus and has never worked. Jack fixes it, which creates a whole new set of problems.

As nefarious people want the computer because it can hack anything, leaving privacy a thing of the past, Jack and his group of urban outlaws try to outwit the bad guys.

This is a solid middle-school novel. The group has one problem after the other which keeps the plot moving along and the pages turning. The relationships between the five are heart-warming because they have created a family of sorts, as they don’t have family themselves. They care about each other and will do what is necessary to protect one another. Although the story is rather far-fetched, it’s still a nice robin hood tale with a dose of caution against the possibilities technology holds. ( )
