======================================

“You don’t rob banks.”
“I can’t open an account in one.”
“What do you do with your money?”
“Keep it under my mattress like a skid-row bum.”

This is such a fascinating movie, the only one, I believe, with Jane Fonda and Robert De Niro together. What happens between their characters is one of the strangest romances you’ll ever see.

Iris is a widow with two children who misses badly her old man in his baggy pants making love to her three times a week like clockwork. Stanley is a shy, middle-aged man who can’t open a bank account, get a driver’s license or even keep his job as a modest cook because he is illiterate. The script is rather jumpy. I mean literally. It jumps too much – sometimes, when it doesn’t slow down too much. The dialogue is not without its cringeworthy lines. But it’s not some sort of sentimental trash, either. It’s an intelligent fairy tale for adults.

This is a very quiet movie. No great dramas, no violent histrionics, nothing like that. Just simple people trying to cope with life as best they could. The most dramatic scene is reading aloud in a library. But the two leads make every minute worthwhile. De Niro is absolutely brilliant, proving yet again that he could play anybody, even timid small-scale half-losers, with distinction. (Incidentally, the same year saw him cast against type in Awakenings, a very different role which he pulled off with the same panache.) Jane Fonda, besides looking stunning for a woman in her fifties (many women look fine in their fifties, but very few look stunning), gives an equally subtle, and equally devoid of ham, performance as the more voluble and volatile Iris. Great star power is no guarantee of screen chemistry, but here it does happen.

For sure this is not the greatest movie ever made. But I am still baffled by its monumental obscurity, not to mention its poor rating. It is obligatory for Fonda or De Niro fans, of course. I would also say that anybody interested in real people, if not in realistic plots, would not consider their time wasted. No idea how they got involved such huge stars like Fonda and De Niro in a modest production like this. But as Stanley says: “Iris, anything is possible.” ( )
