I'm feeling philosophical today. Carl Hiassen has written books for kids and, now for the first time, young adults. What is the definitional difference? One would think it was the complexity, themes, maturity. In this case, I think it is nothing more than the ages of the protagonists. Teenager Richard joins forces with Hiaason's iconic character, Skink, to find his cousin Malley, who has disappeared. As she is flighty, nobody is quite sure whether she has run away or been kidnapped. Ex-governor of Florida Skink is a staunch environmentalist, defender of nature, who lives off the grid, pursuing his own agenda. He is a hoot. Sadly, the plot here leaves much to be desired and most of the characters are inconsistent during the chase. ( )

Old reviews went missing. How does save not working?

Entertaining book. Hiassen is funny and his books are a joy to read. ( )

I didn't realize this was part of a series of books featuring Skink that I had picked up in the middle, but it didn't really matter as the book stands alone. This is a really good read, as I have come to expect from Hiaasen, with some great characters and a good plot. I really like the Skink character - a former governor and a vet who is now an activist and crusader. In this book he helps a young man, Robert, locate his missing cousin who may have run away on her own or may have been abducted, or both. The writing is very readable, the characters relatable (well, maybe not Skink unless, like me, you grew up in teh 60's), and the story has a few bumps, twists, and surprises along the way. A good read that makes me want to read more of the Skink books. ( )

I love Carl Hiaasen's kids' books. He never panders and he always relies on kids to get the job done. This book is no exception. It is his first foray into YA literature, although this book would be suitable for grades as young as 5, if the reader is mature. Language is appropriate, though subject matter hints at darker issues. The two main characters, Richard and Malley are cousins just days apart in age, and best friends. When Malley runs off with a guy she met online (stranger danger!) Richard sets off after her with the unlikely help of his own brush with stranger danger, Skink -- environmental vigilante and former governor of FL, widely presumed to be dead. He is a hilarious character, though why Richard trusts him takes a little leap of faith from the reader. Their pursuit of the scumball Malley is mixed up with is equally hilarious and madcap and moves along at a brisk pace. While Skink's survival ability is a bit much to swallow at times, the bigger issue for me was the idiocy of the parents portrayed in the novel. ( )

I have been trying to figure out if this book is one of Hiaasen's YA novels as the protagoniss are 14-year old teenagers. If so, it's for very mature teenagers. Young Richard's cousin Malley goes missing after she runs off with someone she met in an Internet chatroom Richard decides, against his parent's wishes that he has to find her. He hooks up with Skink, the crazy ex-governor of Florida who is a staple in Hiaasen's novels. Skink leads Richard on a wild chase through the Florida swamps, raging storms and several gun battles before all is settled at the end. Hiaasen never disappoints. ( )
