Abby Raines is leaving Las Vegas. She's trading the glitter and excess of her hometown for the rolling hills and lush forests of Rapid City, South Dakota. She's taken her first real job, and she's determined to succeed on her own. Mark Marsten traded the Texas range for the Army Rangers years ago and never looked back. Now, he's settled permanently in Rapid City with the remaining members of his Special Forces unit. He thought he had it all-well, almost anyway. Until a sassy redhead with a sharp tongue and body to die for rolled into town. Mark knows that he's too much for her long-term, but he can't resist a fling with Rapid City's newest resident. He thought that he knew the game. After all, it's his game. And always his rules. But more and more it feels like Abby is the one holding all the cards. Contains mature themes.… (més)

The 2 stars here are for Abby's cool character. I am not much of a one for BDSM although I have read a dozen or so. This just went far for me to believe in the love aspect of the story. He treated her pretty poorly and roughly. There are some other reviews that go into the failures on the BDSM front so I won't repeat but it really seemed to me that he treated her like a thing and didn't do any of the hugging and whatnot after that I believe is part of the deal. I'm not an expert. Earlier we had been led to believe that he just liked kink in the bedroom but that is not how he was written. I didn't like the scene with the woman either. That seems like something that should have been discussed first. Then I didn't like how Abby responded to it all and was so desperate for Tex that she came crawling to him. I also wasn't fond of all the guys and their gals knowing about their bedroom antics.

Biggest fail for me though is that there wasn't much story other than the sex part. I don't mind a few well written sex scenes but I want there to be more story to go along with it.

Still I expected not to care much for this book and I was perfectly happy to go on with the series. ( )

I'm writing a review primarily because I think it's unfair that people rate this book based on a wrong idea of what it was about. There was BDSM and power exchange. Absolutely. There was also a warning. Did I love the scene with the power exchange? No. Was I outraged? No. He told her from the beginning it was going to be hard and the reality of it might be terrifying. Did he necessarily go about it in the right way? No. A Dom should never, ever essentially punish someone he has asked to make decisions for when he is angry. This is BDSM 101. He also realized and apologized for it. I think this book was not what people were expecting, especially after the first in the series was so unlike this one. BUT that doesn't mean it was a poorly written or poorly thought-out book. It just means it was different. There's a warning there for a reason. ( )

I really enjoyed the first book of this series. It was a great story. However this one did not live up to the first. The first book had more plot/story to it. This one seemed to be mainly about BDSM sex. It was still a good read but not great like the first. There definite parts in this book that I could see why others didn't like it. I also didn't like the formatting in this book or the first one. Huge space between paragraphs making me think it's changing to a different scene when it's not. The author could do better on the formatting. ( )
