I have been wanting to read this book for so long and now that I’ve finally read it, I feel a little underwhelmed, but also surprised. I think the reason why I was a bit underwhelmed is because the story took forever to reach a TRULY pivotal moment. Not to say that the other various events that took place in the book weren’t entertaining, just that the story kept building and building until I wasn’t sure we’d ever get a real climax. I obviously enjoyed Tahir’s writing style, but what I was really surprised by the way she displayed Laia’s and Elias’s characters. I was expecting them to be more menacing or at least have some spark, but it took a while for Laia to find her fire and Elias his sense of self. I liked that Laia wasn’t a fighter right from the beginning though, it gives her a lot more room to grow. I think it’ll take Elias a bit longer to find himself and feel comfortable with who he is, but I know he’ll get there eventually. Anyway, I greatly enjoyed this book—I basically read it in two days, and I haven’t done that in a long time, so that’s saying something. Definitely excited to continue with this series; I can’t wait to see what else it has in store! ( )

At the bookstore, I’ve become sort of the go-to YA fantasy expert, but I haven’t had the heart to tell all of my little “book-groupies” (as my coworkers call them) that my heart hasn’t really been in the genre lately and that half the recommendations I’ve been giving them are books that I haven’t actually read yet. An Ember in the Ashes was one of those books – one I had heard very good things about, but had not actually managed to read.

And to be honest, it took me three tries before I really found myself enthralled by the story. The first to times were “traditional” reading attempts, and thankfully, I still persisted after those two failed and I checked the audiobook out of my local library and, thankfully, was instantly hooked. So this review is equal parts story review and audiobook reader review.

As a story, Sabaa Tahir weaves together two characters from completely different worlds, making their paths cross occasionally, but without unnecessarily intersecting – a real challenge of writing in multiple perspectives. Laia and Elias’ stories join at important plot points, but without complicating the timeline or narrative. Both are strong narrators on their own which means that while one character is narrating, the reader/listener is fully immersed in that part of the story, not anxiously reading through to get to the other narrator, as is wont to happen in some multiple perspective plots. The two readers also do an exceptional job of conveying the urgency and emotion felt by both Laia and Elias in their individual and joint circumstances. ( )

"You have a soul. It's damaged, but is there. Don't let them take it from you."

A very solid YA fantasy that discerns itself from the multitude of others with a darker and more violent approach, as well as with a distancing from the usual european-style world (I'm not sure why so many people call it roman inspired? Because it's an empire? The real world influences are way more middle eastern).

It was interesting enough, with some moments that diverge from the usual plot formula, and I really enjoyed that it never shied away from the violence that the genre usually doesn't tackle on. The brutality of some scenes really took me by surprise, enough for me to say that this would make a incredible adult novel if it shed away some (very unnecessary) YA cliches.

And those YA cliches are a good part of why An Ember In The Ashes didn't manage to be a 5★ read for me: the romance has barely to no chemistry, there's a hint of a love triangle that makes me want to die, and the protagonist is absolutely bland. Laia has almost no active power through the narrative and I sincerely hope it's on purpose to give her space to grow in the next books, she's got a good soul and says pretty words but her side of the story contributes close to nothing to the plot compared to the other narrator, Elias. He's the one who really builds the bulk of what the story is about: systematic oppression, violence and desensitization.

I'm interested on where the series is going, with the hint of magic and subtle politics we got so far, specially because the downsides are not very prominent compared to the very rich narrative I hope to see more of. ( )

I was so hesitant to start this one because I was scared that I wasn't going to like it but I was so wrong. An Ember in the Ashes was amazing!

It kept me intrigued since the beginning of the book. Granted, it felt a bit chaotic at the middle but I still really enjoyed it!

I liked the aesthetics and the mix of culture that Sabaa created in this book, a bit of Middle East culture and the old Roman empire in the desert.

Laia is a character that I loved. Not so much at first but I feel like what bothered me about her was her lack of self-esteem and that way of not mistrusting people. I really liked her as a main character because I feel like we don't have the same kind of protagonist, the special, gifted girl who is good at almost everything, but instead we have a girl who is terrified but willing to give her life for her brother. We have a girl who is gradually overcoming herself and growing as a person.

Elias enchants you from the first moment you meet him. He is very brave and strong and he has very well decided what he wants and what he believes.

I liked that the relationship between Elias and Laia wasn't an insta-love, they felt attracted to each other but just physically and they make it known, not confusing it with love. I liked seeing how their interactions were few but meaningful, and I like that the only deep interaction they had was enough to create a connection that surpasses that physical attraction, but that neither of them still proclaims love to the other.

I'm so excited to start the next book! ( )
