**Goodreads Finalist for Best Romance 2015** Two brothers bound by more than blood fight to change a brutal destiny in the heart-wrenching new novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood by Sunday Times bestselling author J. R. Ward. Trez "Latimer" doesn't really exist. And not just because the identity was created so that a Shadow could function in the underbelly of the human world. Sold by his parents to the Queen of the S'Hsibe as a child, Trez escaped the Territory and has been a pimp and an enforcer in Caldwell, NY for years- all the while on the run from a destiny of sexual servitude. He's never had anyone he could totally rely on . . . except for his brother, iAm. iAm's sole goal has always been to keep his brother from self-destructing - and he knows he's failed. It's not until the Chosen Selena enters Trez's life that the male begins to turn things around . . . but by then it's too late. The pledge to mate the Queen's daughter comes due and there is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and no negotiating. Trapped between his heart and a fate he never volunteered for, Trez must decide whether to endanger himself and others - or forever leave behind the female he's in love with. But then an unimaginable tragedy strikes and changes everything. Staring out over an emotional abyss, Trez must find a reason to go on or risk losing himself and his soul forever. And iAm, in the name of brotherly love, is faced with making the ultimate sacrifice . . .… (més)

5 stars yadda yadda yadda -

hERES MY PROBLEM WITH ALL THIS.
Why did it never, not once, occur to ANYONE that Payne could have helped Selena???? Frankly it was ridiculous and either a massive oversight or a plain plothole. It should have come up at least once, layla of all people would have known to say something, and even if that’s not what ward wanted it 100000% should have been brought up.

why was assail in this book?? his chapters were incredibly boring, and i really do not care about his drug dealing and cocaine addiction (boohoo he’s heartbroken - give me some tears then!! some real emotion!)

love xcor and layla, as always. but this book really took a dive with them :/ it seemed really abrupt that he would freak out on her like that, especially so much that he said he never wanted to see her again. i hate that he slept with another woman too, it just seemed incredibly out of pocket even for him. i also didn’t like that there wasn’t anymore layla after all that, i really wanted her to go meet up with him while her arm was broken and have him freak out over her but instead it was a shit storm.

speaking of- i love having rhage back around, but i’m annoyed his second book is next instead of layla and xcor’s. how much more time can she possibly need to get those two together?? it’ll have been like 2 years since they met by the time we get to book 15.

final thoughts:
this one was a tear jerker for me, especially the scene with Selena before she breaks the window and she says,

“These thoughts—I don’t want them! You think I want to tell you this? Jesus Christ, Trez, I love you! I don’t want you to ever be with another female, like ever! I want you to sit in a corner and mourn me until you die—I don’t want you to see the sun or the moon, or enjoy another meal, or have a good day’s sleep! I want to haunt you for the rest of your life, until everywhere you go and anyone you talk to, all you can see is the ghost of me—because then I know you won’t forget me!
You want to know what death is! I’ll tell you what it is—death is the living forgetting you! What you smell like and look like, what your voice sounds like, how you laugh! Even if there is an afterlife, my death is going to be you going on without me until you can’t remember what color my eyes are or how long my hair is—”

this shit GOT to me. some of ward’s most heart wrenching, REAL, writing is in this book and i really appreciate that more than anything else here.

ps im happy for iam and im pleasantly surprised at how well trez is doing at the end (if it were me i would be so jealous of iam and maichen being happy, it would be toxic as hell) ( )

So...once again by pure chance I fell into this book's path. I found it at a local library book sale and thought...what the heck, sounds interesting.

I really need to google my authors and books more often. Had I known what I was letting myself in for I would have prepared better.

I don't know their whole history but this moment of their present caught me so off guard. It took me took boxes of Kleenex and a pot of hot tea to make it through the death scene.

I loved the build up of the relationship between Selena and Trez. She knew a little of his past but not everything for he wanted to feel worthy of his queen. (Love that he referred to her as that) And she, she wanted to keep him from knowing their time was limited so as to not put a pall on their time together. I get that...the whole I know I'm dying but I want to live to the fullest and not be weighted down with "cures" and "treatments". Choosing how one is going to die and what happens after is such a personal and hard to face reality.

iAm, Trez's brother who took the term my brother's keeper to heart, I adore him. So full of love for his brother and wanting to keep him free. Willing to risk everything and ask everyone for help to allow him to do this. He finally finds love....and what a love. Really, I saw it coming as to her identity but the depth of their quickly found love was heartening even as I cried for Trez.

The others....OMG....Wrath, sEx, Rhage, V....all of them sound so interesting and WOW that now I am determined to find the rest of the series and start from the beginning. Might take me a while but if they are as well written as this one I'm in for a pleasant journey through this world of theirs.

WOW!!! Just WOW!!!

OMG this was one whammy of a BDB installment and what a journey The Shadows took us on. I have never wanted a story not to end so much as I did this one, i had guessed what was coming and was dreading it, but also along with everyone else praying for a miracle, this was not a romance as such but a beautiful heart wrenching tragic love story and I spent the second half of this story with tears streaming down my face, all other characters and plot twists faded into the background for me as I was so focused on Selena and Trez ,I loved this book but absolutely hated the ending and wish Trez had been able to join Selena in the Fade they could have had there HEA in the afterlife instead poor Trez has to walk round Broken living a half life totally devastated for him but even with the crappy ending The Shadows is totally amazing reading just keep the tissues handy your gonna need them.
