When the wyrd-woman warned Ivor he was going to meet a monster, he didn't believe her. He thought he had worse things to worry about. He was wrong about both.

This is the kind of book I would have loved as a kid. While not as satisfying as an adult, it's nevertheless an enjoyable, quick read.

I'm thinking I would have most enjoyed this around age 10, but I suppose it will depend on the kid. ( )

This was an enjoyable novel of fantasy featuring plenty of myth. Our brave hero must go on an adventure with plenty of mysteries and challenges to save his beautiful lady love. It is a short well written story leading to a sweet conclusion. I look forward to reading more by this author. ( )

The Runner and the Kelpie by Dave Duncan. Third in Duncan's "Runner" series of novellas. The runner, Ivor, has fallen for his master's daughter (and she for him), but must carry messages regarding her betrothal to another. The Kelpie is just one of the risks along the way. Dave Duncan is a great storyteller, and this is good fun. I recommend it and the two previous stories. The three of them make one book, really.

This is the third book in Dave Duncan’s Runner series and it brings to a nice conclusion various storylines that were started in the earlier books. At the same time, this novel contains an interesting and well-paced story and it would work just fine as a standalone book. Ivor is a very likeable character, and I would very much like to read more stories featuring this humble and resourceful young man. ( )
