Apparantly it was a TED talk? Anyway, Adichie uses refreshingly direct language and really cuts into the heart of the matter. I haven't read anything else by her yet so I don't know if this is an affectation to make her essay more accessible or if this is her natural style. If it's the latter then I'll bump [b:Americanah|15796700|Americanah|Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1356654499s/15796700.jpg|21519538] to the top of my to reads list. I agreed with much that the author said here, and it was written simply enough, and is short enough, that I think this is very accessible reading on the topic. I enjoyed seeing the Nigerian perspective. However, stereotypes exist for a reason, and not all feminists or anti-feminists are so balanced in their views as the author is. There were also a few times she'd say something like, "Women deal with xyz, but men don't," and left no room for a variety of experiences, which contradicted her opening and closing ideas. The part about women being viewed as inherently guilty in comparison to men definitely rang true, though, as I see this attitude a lot in the United States. "...they have been raised to expect so little of men that the idea of men as savage beings with no self-control is somehow acceptable." p 33 I think this could be a good discussion starter for groups.
