Fantasy. Fiction. Romance. Historical Fiction. #1 New York Times bestselling author Diana Gabaldon returns with the newest novel in the epic Outlander series. The past may seem the safest place to be ... but it is the most dangerous time to be alive. ...Jamie Fraser and Claire Randall were torn apart by the Jacobite Rising in 1746, and it took them twenty years to find each other again. Now the American Revolution threatens to do the same. It is 1779 and Claire and Jamie are at last reunited with their daughter, Brianna, her husband, Roger, and their children on Fraser's Ridge. Having the family together is a dream the Frasers had thought impossible. Yet even in the North Carolina backcountry, the effects of war are being felt. Tensions in the Colonies are great and local feelings run hot enough to boil Hell's teakettle. Jamie knows loyalties among his tenants are split and it won't be long until the war is on his doorstep. Brianna and Roger have their own worry: that the dangers that provoked their escape from the twentieth century might catch up to them. Sometimes they question whether risking the perils of the 1700s??among them disease, starvation, and an impending war??was indeed the safer choice for their family. Not so far away, young William Ransom is still coming to terms with the discovery of his true father's identity??and thus his own??and Lord John Grey has reconciliations to make, and dangers to meet ... on his son's behalf, and his own. Meanwhile, the Revolutionary War creeps ever closer to Fraser's Ridge. And with the family finally together, Jamie and Claire have more at stake than… (més)

This ninth book in the Outlander series did not disappoint. Ms. Galbadon continues to bring to life the trials of the Frasers of Fraser Ridge, North Carolina, and their growing family, now deeply touched by the American Revolution. Jamie’s tenants’ loyalties are divided between Loyalists and rebels as the war draws closer to its conclusion, creating a powder keg in their remote outpost. Jamie’s son, William, is still coming to terms with the revelation that Jamie, the one-time groom at his grandfather’s English estate, is his father, and even among William’s adoptive family, families are being torn apart by their different political beliefs. So, on one hand I enjoyed getting to 'see' the characters again. On the other hand, it turned out to be so disappointing and it breaks my heart to say that, I love this series so very much. I didn't feel like it answered any questions, if anything it just created more. I feels as though this book was set up to "get us ready" for the next one and I don't know that I can get excited about another 7 years wait. The ending was...so wrong and abrupt. A cliffhanger ending after waiting as long as we did is just not in good form. There is a part of me that wonders if this book wasn't entirely written to give the TV series more to go on. I hope that I am wrong.

BIG kudos to Davina Porter. Once again, she did a fabulous job. 5 stars to her. ( )

Okay - I'm a devoted DG fan. I'm on Team Lord John. Seriously. How can you leave the Grey family in such a mess? You did it on purpose didn't you? Be as sadistic as you wish with that Witch of yours...frankly it is cruel the way she keeps that unsuspecting Scottish fellow from any kind of rest. A bit of Frankenstein's-monster-like the way she keeps stitching him back together. Much more civilized with Lord John and co. DG had been so good about developing the Grey family story lines and keeping us all informed...no dramatic "wait, I'm busy writing, you can be sure" bologna... Now, it's like f*$k this... some well-meaning (but, maybe not totally sane?) 20th Century race-warrior needs to kidnap Lord John!? AND THAT IS WHERE YOU END THE BOOK?? Seriously. You had better be on form with your other Lord John books, woman. Seriously. [DG - you write historic fiction/soft erotica so well...don't ruin it with the weird sci-fi stuff...please] ( )
