Good start to a story, but didn't really stand alone. Fortunately the sequel is out now. ( )

This is book sixteen in the Dresden Files series. I'm not sure if I have previously written a review for any of the other books, so this is going to be a little different.

The book can be read as a stand-alone story, but obviously there has been so much going on through the previous books, it is best read in order. There isn't a lot of bringing facts and 'how that came to be's written in, which I'm happy about. I hate the waste of space and story when authors do that sort of thing in every book after the first one. I'm not going to say much about the story, because come on, if you are in this at book sixteen, you are pretty much a die hard fan of the series anyways.

As usual, Butcher's writing style is just what I like - pretty fast and somewhat of the cuff. Basic on his character and world building, the usual elements of sarcasm, irony, and bull-headedness run pretty rampant. Our MC follows the modeling that was written, including the changes made due to events in previous installments. I enjoy the way Butcher has been able to build a world and characters from multiple backgrounds (ie. all the different types of paranormals, etc) and make them fit together to make the story. Definitely waiting for the next book to be released! ( )

It was okay, I guess.

I was listening to the audiobook and when I got halfway through the book, I was like, “wait, I’m halfway through already? Has anything interesting even happened?”

I agree that Dresden choosing to not communicate a certain critical piece of information was just idiotic and a blatant attempt at building tension. It’s not the kind of secret that can or should be kept. And then, when at the end of the book Dresden thinks, “yeah, I really need to say it.” I can’t help but think, nothing’s really changed about the situation; if you could tell him now, you could’ve told him earlier.

The one interesting thing about this book - that made this slightly better than Ghost Story - is that it built an interesting cliffhanger (with Ghost Story you can skip the whole book and you wouldn’t have missed anything).
If anything, Peace Talk felt like the first half of a book.

I was originally wondering why Audible was telling me the next book is coming out in October. Now I feel like they just split the one story into two books.

Maybe to recoup some of the money of having no proper Dresden books out for the past 6-7 years? That’s the cynical part of me talking.

Anyway, this is a book you need to read if you want to follow the Dresden series, but I wouldn’t hold too high of an expectation. ( )

Harry's got an uneasy truce going with the White Council and he's trying to balance his different loyalties - Winter, wizardry, humanity, his daughter, his brother ... it's an impossible job but he can't do anything else. This is really part one of a two part story arc. ( )

Some light Spoilers ahead so if you plan to read this book just don't read the review.

I'm going to be honest, I think this is half a book. It feels very much like one book split into two. The next book will be a big part of this story. However even as half a story this is still better than 3/4 of the other stuff out there. It wasn't a Thrill a minute book but it was a good setting up book ready for BATTLEGROUND. I am very excited about the prospect of this.

All the pieces are in place and it feels a little like a recap of all the major players and all the major things that will play a big part in book 17. Very excited to see where this goes.

It does it'd job to remind you how Big Harry'd world has gotten and who he can call "Allies" and who are his "enemies" but even that isn't as easy as you think.

It feels like the episode before a season finale, so deep breath wait till Battleground and heres hoping he can "Swing for the Fences." ( )
