Hugo award-winning author, John Scalzi returns to his bestselling Old Man's War universe with The End of All Things, the direct sequel to 2013's The Human Division Humans expanded into space...only to find a universe populated with multiple alien species bent on their destruction. Thus was the Colonial Union formed, to help protect us from a hostile universe. The Colonial Union used the Earth and its excess population for colonists and soldiers. It was a good arrangement...for the Colonial Union. Then the Earth said: no more. Now the Colonial Union is living on borrowed time--a couple of decades at most, before the ranks of the Colonial Defense Forces are depleted and the struggling human colonies are vulnerable to the alien species who have been waiting for the first sign of weakness to drive humanity to ruin. And there's another problem: a group, lurking in the darkness of space, playing human and alien against each other--and against their own kind--for their own unknown reasons. In this collapsing universe, CDF Lieutenant Harry Wilson and the Colonial Union diplomats he works with race against the clock to discover who is behind attacks on the Union and on alien races, to seek peace with a suspicious, angry Earth, and keep humanity's union intact...or else risk oblivion and extinction--and the end of all things.… (més)

Love this series. ( )

A collection of 4 novella length stories that follows on from where the previous book left off. Where tensions between the Colonial Union, Earth and the Conclave getting steadily worse with the efforts of the mysterious third party known as Equilibrium trying to force conflict between the others by destabilising both from within. Can Equilibrium be stopped and is there any chance that humanity can co-exist in a galaxy that distrusts them at best and hates them at worst?

Spending time with some characters from the previous book was more than welcome (even if one of them was only a brain in a box). The 4 stories come together pretty well to form a final resolution to the series that is a fitting and enjoyable read. ( )

The 'Old Man Universe' books have always been a bit irreverent but by this book, everyone is questioning almost everything about the human polity at the centre of the book. The Colonial Union was supposed to defend the human colonies against the deprivations of alien species who'd rather see humanity wiped out, but the means by which it did so are highly unethical and are coming back to bite them pretty badly. A secret organisation has worked out a way to exacerbate existing tensions both internally and externally and the CU is only able to survive by massive changes forced on it by these events. Most of the characters are fairly reasonably drawn, though, as the book is a collection of linked stories rather than a continuous story there's not much character development in the individual stories. Somewhat chunkier than The Human Division in terms of sub-story breakdown, and in a way I liked a lot. Easily my favorite in the series so far. ( )

More of the odd, deliberately conceived multiple stories as fake novel approach seen in the previous entry in the series, though we've gone from short stories to novellas, this time - and fewer of them. Weirdly, it doesn't work as well as the mosaic now looks more like just a bunch of torn canvasses stitched to each other.

I still liked it, though, and it wraps up the story (again, it was wrapped up well enough three books ago) well enough. Over-all I liked this series better when it stopped being narrowly focused on people who had no clue about the big picture and instead became actually about that big picture. Way more interesting to me than war stories where we have no clue about the causes of the war. ( )

New readers will certainly enjoy the work, but the real payoff comes for longtime fans, who will especially appreciate a powerful moment featuring the alien General Gau. Scalzi knows just how to satisfy his fans, providing tense, thrilling action scenes while turning a critical eye on the interstellar equivalents of the military-industrial complex.
