Set against the backdrop of World War II, this story of promise and possibility is told through the perspective of an abused disabled girl when she and her brother are evacuated from London to the English countryside

This book won a Newberry Honor Award and several others -- all deserved. Ada and her brother Jamie live is London squalor in 1940. Jamie is one of the children to be sent to safety in the country while Ada is trapped at home because of her club foot. Ada decides to sneak away with her younger brother, and they are the only ones not adopted by a family. The rescue organizer takes them to a older woman, Susan, who does not seem to want them, in part because she is withdrawn following the death of her close friend, Becky. Jamie loves the nearby airbase, and Ada falls in love with Becky's pony. All three have a tough time adjusting to their new reality, with Ada feeling particularly vulnerable after years of abuse from her mother. However, nothing wrong with Ada's mind (so far from her foot) or her spirit or her kindness. Things take a rough turn, just when things seem better, but then the bombs start falling. A heartwarming read. ( )

children's historical fiction (1940s England); 4th-5th grade (Ada is 10-11 years old). This is more about Ada's growth than the war, but it is a pretty good story about a "cripple" (girl born with a club-foot) with serious abandonment issues. The ending was a bit abrupt but I still liked the book overall and think it could definitely be a contender for the Newbery this year. ( )

This was a quick read for me, as it's written for middle-school-ish readers, but also an exciting and moving one. Ada, who has a deformed foot, has been kept in a single room her whole life. But then she and her brother are evacuated to a seaside town and she see things and has experiences that widen her world. We see her struggles with the new experiences, her gradually expanding understanding, and the war as viewed by her and her little brother. I need to get my hands on the sequel asap. ( )

This book is another great option to have in any classroom as it talks about a girl who has a deformity that her mother doesn't necessarily like and makes the young girl feel as if she isn't accepted. Ada, finds a way to sneak off when her brother is taken by a woman names Susan and learns so many new things and ends up falling in love with her new life. This book can help children relate and also see other obstacles that children may have to face that they have no clue about. ( )
