Long ago, Fitz and the Fool changed the world, bringing back the magic of dragons and securing both the Farseer succession and the stability of the kingdom. Or so they thought. But now the Fool is near death, maimed by mysterious pale-skinned figures whose plans for world domination hinge upon the powers the Fool may share with Fitz's own daughter. Distracted by the Fool's perilous health, and swept up against his will in the intrigues of the royal court, Fitz lets down his guard . . . and in a horrible instant, his world is undone and his beloved daughter stolen away by those who would use her as they had once sought to use the Fool--as a weapon. But FitzChivalry Farseer is not without weapons of his own. An ancient magic still lives in his veins. And though he may have let his skills as royal assassin diminish over the years, such things, once learned, are not so easily forgotten. Now enemies and friends alike are about to learn that nothing is more dangerous than a man who has nothing left to lose.… (més)

And here comes the real review, not just updates of my desperate attempt to get the book...

All hail Robin Hobb Queen writer of fantasy!

Seriously this book was so amazingly good that I now sit here writing and knowing that I will never be able to put down in words how fantastic the book is. For everyone that has read Rob Hobb before and not yet read this book or the one before will I say that you will love this series, the books just keep getting better and better and Hobb still knows how to surprise her readers. To those that have never Read a Hobb book, do it, hell do it even if you are not a fantasy fan. They are well written, the story will pull you in completely. Just start with The Farseer trilogy, of course, always best to start from the beginning.

Anyway, this book is better than the first book in The Fitz and the Fool trilogy, but that doesn't make the first book bad, this one just has a lot more action it, more going ones, more Fool. And, having Fitz and the Fool reunited again was just was marvelous as in Fool's Errand (the first book in the Tawny Man trilogy) when they met again after several years apart. This book story continues the story from the first book with the Fool hurt and dying and Fitz tries to save him, but it seems futile, but you should never say never and solutions can show up where you least expect them. And, little Bee, Fitz daughter has been taken, but it will take some time for Fitz to know that, but when he does, then he will do everything in his power to get his daughter back and punish the bad people behind the kidnapping.

This book is around 750 pages long, but it could have been twice as many pages because it is so good, it is never boring, the pace is just perfect, not a single thing that happens in the book is boring, no skimming of the text, hell there are moments when I had to reread sentence because they are so good written and they go straight to my heart.

I loved this book. I have lived with the story, with Fitz and the Fool and the rest of the characters for a couple of days and now I have to leave it for a while and it is almost painful to not have more to read. Luckily for me, I still have some books written by Hobb that I still haven't read, alas no Fitz and Fool book waiting, but I can always reread the earlier books with them if I want to.

So, umm, I should have written my summary before I was ~200 pages into the third book. Which is to say, this book is a typical second-in-a-trilogy in that the boundaries between it and the next book are fluid. In this case, fluid means almost non-existent.

This book continues the story started in Fool's Assassin and continued in Assassin's Fate. In some ways, this installment was less about continuing the main plot of those stories (although it did do that too) and more about starting to tie up some loose ends in Fitz's life. I really love how, with this third trilogy, Hobb has created something that not a lot of fantasy authors do: a series that explores the whole life of a character, from youth to maturity.

In true Robin Hobb fashion, this book also sometimes moves slowly. I love it because the slow bits are what give her books their depth, but I know that others get annoyed at how travel of both people and information can be realistically slow in Hobb's novels.

Without giving spoilers, I'll note that by the end of this book, you'll want to have read the Liveship Traders trilogy and the Rain Wilds series (and by the beginning of the third book, you really ought to have read them or else it's going to be a lot more confusing). ( )

Here's where I left everyone, so I'm not completely lost when #3 comes out!

Bee: taken through a Witness Stone by dumbass Whites in possession of the Fool's fingertips. Believed to be lost in the Skill-current. ... Haven't the characters been reading?

Fitzy- no, Prince FitzChivalry Farseer: on his way to Clerres, to avenge his little Bee. Currently in Kelsingra, his skill feeling odd but powerful. He's "adjusting" people the way dragons do, but according to what the people want. He fixed Thymara and Tats' daughter! Tats and Thymara have a daughter! Unable to Skill to Nettle and co. back in Buck.

The Fool: forcibly accompanying Fitz to Kelsingra, despite his post-torture general weakness and goddamn blindness being big fat fucking hindrances. Sort of hijacked Chade's apprentice, Ash/Spark.
