Loved this deeply as a young person. Remember sobbing my eyes out and reading it repeatedly. ( ![]() I have rarely been so relieved to finish a book DNF @ page 294. I just don't care that much about rabbits. Although I do have a fierce craving for hasenpfeffer now. An timeless adventure story about love, loyalty, politics, and nature. *************** This is one of my all times favourite books. I've never encountered another book where the animals were so familiar and so alien at the same time, with a society that isn't simply a human imitation, but well rounded and based on the real rabbits way of life in the wild. The book is a sort of fantasy with animals, where the main characters struggle and fight to gain a place in world, and their struggle is so more evident as the are rabbit living a rabbit life. Please read it, you won't regret it.
Watership Down offers little to build a literary cult upon. On the American-whimsy exchange, one Tolkien hobbit should still be worth a dozen talking rabbits. This bunny-rabbit novel not only steers mostly clear of the usual sticky, anthropomorphic pitfalls of your common garden-variety of bunny rabbit story: it is also quite marvelous for a while, and after it stops being marvelous, it settles down to be pretty good- a book you can live with from start to finish.
