In my opinion, “Journey of a Bar of Chocolate” is a good book for young children because it shows the important steps of making a bar of chocolate. Not only is this book teaching children how a bar of chocolate is made, but also informs the reader where chocolate can be found around the world. One of the qualities that I like about this book is the step-by-step instruction of how chocolate is made from beginning to end. The book starts with where cocoa beans are found in the world and what the beans look. It explains that, “Most cocoa trees grow in West Africa, South America, and parts of Asia.” It also shows a map of the areas where cocoa beans and trees are located within the map. Another quality that I enjoyed was the glossary, chocolate quiz, and “find out” more sections at the end of the book. The glossary defines the words contained within the book that were bold faced. The chocolate quiz goes over the main points of the journey of chocolate and what pages the answers are located. Finally, the “find out” more gives websites where you can learn more about chocolate and how it is prepared. The big idea of the book is to show children how chocolate goes through a process journey before entering the stores where consumers will buy the different types and products of chocolate. The Journey of a... series looks at how common products end up in our homes, starting with the raw materials and ending with the finished product. This title looks at the journey of a bar of chocolate, examining how and where the cocoa beans are grown, how they are harvested, how they are turned into chocolate, and how the chocolate is packaged, transported and distributed to shops, and eventually eaten!
