The latest publication from Martian Migraine Press is an attempt “to showcase transgressive weird-erotic stories that go beyond the usual expectations”. Edited by Justine Geoffrey and Scott R. Jones whose goal for the magazine is to “push the boundaries of weird-erotica” while “paying homage to the mythical book of Cthulhu Mythos magic and madness that the magazine’s name puns on” Behind a nice cover by Michael Lee MacDonald the electronic magazine presents five stories. The first "Hank, the Last" by Jessica McHugh is a witty apocalyptic tale about the perfect lover. It contains a ton of strangeness and some great, mysterious lines; my favourite being: "The books and museums had given me more than orgasms". "Such Strange, Wondrous Depth" by Konstantine Paradias is a captivating alien story of an outlandish, slimy otherworldly union. The tale has a wholly wondrous, submerged, savage and alien feel but also talks of strange flesh haunted dreams and a woman bearing abnormal alien fruits inside her. It is smoothly written, with a horrifically ambiguous ambience and a real sensation of strange love. "Lascivious Tongues" by Christine Morgan is both a "forbidden book that shouldn't be opened" story and a clever metaphor for the entrancing beauty of words and stories. The tale is beautifully told, the language compelling, with some stunning adjective-rich descriptive passages. This is a great story, full of great dialogue and a central character that is exquisitely developed within a short period of time. "Lascivious Tongues" clearly demonstrates that words can transport us into very different worlds and into very strange new mental landscapes – in the case of Jessica Barlowe, headmistress of Eastridge School for Young Ladies, literally so. Christine Morgan’s story is hugely enjoyable and is probably my favourite in the magazine. "Seductress" by Ramsey Campbell first appeared in "The Sixth Mayflower Book of Black Magic Stories" and is a tale I'm familiar with from Campbell's collection "Scared Stiff: Tales of Sex and Death". The story is a powerfully nihilistic tale of obsession and a mother's revenge. It is low key, dark and startling and although it isn't amongst my very favourite Campbell stories it is still a thoroughly impressive story of dark and weird erotica. The final story is "Cold Air" by Sean Hoade, which is a genuinely funny tale of cold sex and hot sacrifice as "Jane Doe" seeks out a sex-infatuated young man to assist her in with her unholy sex rites. This is a fun story that makes innovative use of an autopsy table. It is witty, has a great turn of comedic phrase, but is also told with an underpinning of chilling horror. It is also the only tale in the magazine to feature references to the great Cthulhu himself. The magazine also contains two poems: "Mad Man in the Moon" by Pattie Palmer-Baker and "Stuff Intaglio" by Richard King Perkins II and a short, but informative essay on the sadly defunct "Cthulhu Sex Magazine" by Bobby Derie. Overall, the first edition of "Necronomicum" is a hugely impressive package. The stories all work well and provide a well-balanced mix of genuine horror, weird eroticism and general strangeness (all spiced with a stab of dark, dark humour). This is a very solid and very commendable first edition from Martian Migraine Press and if the quality of the contents is anything to go by this will fast become a must-buy anthology magazine.
