It was difficult to get into at first, but then I found it even more difficult to come out of it, to let go of Nadia and her way of thinking and return to me and my life. It may be a book that people put down quickly, because it's so different, but I would urge you to keep going because it's one that will stick with you. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya
Nadia Cara is in Florence, Italy with her family because her professor father is researching the 1966 flood, but Nadia herself is in trouble--she has turned into a kleptomaniac and she feels detached from everything, except for an elusive Italian boy whom no one but herself has seen. This is the story of Nadia, a teenage girl who is losing her ability to speak, finds herself compelled to steal and to make intricate, sculptured nests out of what she steals. The first part of the book is written from her point of view, so the sentences are choppy and we (like Nadia) aren't sure what is real and what is imagined. The author, in this way, allows Nadia's voice to shine and brings the reader more deeply into what she is experiencing.
The voice changes to that of Nadia's long-time best friend (Maggie) in the second half. At first, I was disappointed but, again, the author used Maggie's voice to give us a wider perspective on what what happening to Nadia. Very effective!
Nadia is obsessed with a boy she's seen several times, but no one else has seen him. She needs to know that he is real...he represents her sanity. Bringing Maggie's voice to the forefront allows the author to resolve this question...one which I cared deeply about, for Nadia's sake.
Wonderful book...truly well-crafted and beautifully written. Nadia is a strong character who will stay with me. (
