Bamboo’s amazing versatility, strength, and beauty have given it a larger role in human culture than any other plant. Both sustainable and plentiful, it has been used for millennia to make objects ranging from clothing and housing to more exotic luxuries like phonograph needles and children’s toys, to name but a few. This acclaimed sourcebook--part history, part illustrated catalog, part cultivation guide--details the myriad uses of bamboo, along with an immense bounty of information and lore on how to grow, maintain, and harvest this extraordinary plant; how to use it in craft and construction projects, including floors, fences, papers, and play equipment; and bamboo’s place in the literary, visual, and musical arts. An encyclopedic roster of more than 1,200 bamboo species is a book in itself, as is author David Farrelly’s A-to-Z catalog of artifacts made from bamboo: acupuncture needles, blowguns, bridges, kites, ships, violins, windmills, and a thousand other things. Strong, flexible, and beautiful in both its natural and finished states, bamboo is an abundant resource that could beneficially replace many less sustainable materials currently in use, and continue to transform our culture in the process.… (més)

This is a good book but I think it's out of print because the author died and it never made it on to Kindle. Book talks about how we could use bamboo as a renewable resource to help save the planet and also talks about good things we can do in terms of environmentalism and spiritual practices that are helpful to calm an anxious mind. It is comprehensive. About half to 3/4 of the book is uses of bamboo and things you can make (everything). The remaining quarter covers the various varieties around and growing it which were the parts I was most interested in. Is a good starting point for jumping off in research and would be better to come back to once actually growing. ( )

A truly remarkable and wonderful book, introducing the reader to many uses of bamboo, classification, how it is grown in gardens and commercially, and much much more. There are of course other books that go much deeper into a specific and more narrow aspect of the giant subject of bamboo, but I have yet to see a book on bamboo that has the breadth of David Farelly's book, or the inspirational value. If you want to have just one book on bamboo, my guess is that it is this one you are looking for. ( )

Barefoot Bamboo
To the immense millions of the most penniless,
who would most benefit from bamboo abundance,
the people, the forever forgotten ones who
can't afford a book on bamboo or anything else,
whose bare feet never wander stores in cities
where such information is sold,
who don't have the data and dollars
to search for the species most suited
to their weather and needs,
nor land to plant nor time to wait
until a grove becomes established,
who lack traditions of bamboo know-how
to guide in care, harvest, and use;
who often have never seen and can't afford a tool
more costly or specialized than a machete,
whose daily battle for barest subsistence leaves
little curiosity or energy for the unknown;
whose long historical experience has taught
a salutary distrust of anybody better dressed
or fatter fed coming toward them
with some bright message to better their lot . . .

to those who will never see or touch or hear of it,
who couldn't read it, in any case,
this book is affectionately dedicated.
