Belfast, 1985. Amid the Troubles, Detective Sean Duffy, a Catholic cop in the Protestant Royal Ulster Constabulary, struggles with burnout as he investigates a brutal double murder and suicide. Did Michael Kelly really shoot his parents at point-blank and then jump off a nearby cliff? A suicide note points to this conclusion, but Duffy suspects even more sinister circumstances. He soon discovers that Kelly was present at a decadent Oxford party where a cabinet minister's daughter died of a heroin overdose, which may or may not have something to do with Kelly's subsequent death.New evidence leads elsewhere: gun runners, arms dealers, the British government, and a rogue American agent with a fake identity. Duffy thinks he's getting somewhere when agents from MI5 show up at his doorstep and try to recruit him, thus taking him off the investigation.Duffy is in it up to his neck, doggedly pursuing a case that may finally prove his undoing.… (més)

This series only gets better, it seems. This one was a bit more complex, but the same great mix of characters, background, humor, and story. And the same great narrator, Gerard Doyle. ( )

Another especially enjoyable / easy to read Sean Duffy adventure. This time he is more safely ensconced in his Carrickfergus RUC detective job, but the charming MI5 gal recruits him to join MI5 in a choice capacity. The entire story / book is against this backdrop- we have a rich dead mom and pop and then son suicide. But wait the suicide had a mysterious scandal at Oxford the year before with the high and mighty and a dead gal important person. Brings Sean and a new guy to Oxford (Morse town) to poke around.. he gets the better of his British colleagues (of course he does!). Back to home ground and stirring up trouble up about some missing Javelin missiles that Ollie North (!!!) was poking around looking to buy to give to the Iranians. Yes, he gets beat up and warned off but Sean just keeps butting forward. Very enjoyable, but a very tragic sad end. Duffy won't be joining MI5 after all. Really pretty great read. ( )

Not quite as emotionally compelling as the others in the series I don't think, but McKinty writes with a lot of humor for a sort of noir detective series. And I always enjoy that mix. The ending also just seemed particularly 'right' for the story. Worth reading.

2nd read- I like all the books in this series, but there's something a little less, satisfying, for me, in this one. A bit of melancholy maybe on top of the noir vibe. It's not heavy handed, and there is definitely humor there too, its peaks are just a little bit flattened compared to the others. And though I'm quite attached to the main characters, (who shine in this book), the victims, suspects, witnesses, etc. don't grab me as much as in the other books. The events are still interesting, but I'm not as emotionally invested in the plights of the side characters. ( )

The murder of a wealthy couple and subsequent suicide of their son is the main storyline. Catholic RUC detective Sean Duffy and his kind-of partner Detective McCrabban are not satisfied with the murder/suicide explanation, especially when the son's girlfriend also dies. The Troubles of Ireland, the always changing roster of police in Carrick, and a possible career move for Sean into the intelligence community provide the rest of the backdrop. Sean Duffy remains his own man, warts and all (drugs, girlfriends, neighborhood friends and punks), etc. Once again, Sean goes up against the system to solve the crime and find the truth. Let's hope a fifth book is coming along in this trilogy. ( )

Continuing series. Author cleverly incorporated some history into the story line including Iran-Contra Affair and Oliver North. ( )
