When Adam's parents died three years ago, he kept his five younger siblings together, playing parent as best a twenty-one year old could under the circumstances. Now his academic mentor Helena has passed away from cancer, and Adam doesn't know what to do. He's shocked, but grateful when a reading of the will determines that he's not only inherited her beloved shi tzus, but also the house, a generous trust for everyone's education, plus three million dollars, some of it earmarked for hiring a nanny. Hutch has worked as a nanny since he was nineteen, when he took over the care of his neighbors children when both parents were killed in separate missions overseas. He's worked with several families since and feels confident he can handle five children aged four through seventeen. Hutch's arrival is just what Adam needs and as Hutch begins to turn the big house from Helena's place into their home, Adam and his siblings begin to see Hutch as more than just the nanny. Can a path of tragedy and sorrow turn the corner to happiness and love?… (més)

This third book in the ‘Mannies Incorporated’ series, just like the other two, is a stand-alone novel, but its charm is exactly the same. Maybe even more, at least for me, because it is pretty angst-free and focuses on the developing relationship between Hutch, the new manny, and Adam, the oldest of six siblings who lost their parents three years earlier. The “manny magic” works every time, and much of the fun was watching one kid after the other fall for Hutch’s charms and loving care. Even Adam couldn’t resist, and the result is a wonderful story with some great moments – from funny to touching, just like in most families.

Adam is barely holding it together. He took over raising his five younger siblings when his parents died, but he is still trying to finish his degree while he is at it. At least inheriting a big house and enough money to take care of the financial worries takes some of the load off his shoulders, but it is still a lot to deal with. As soon as he hires Hutch, things begin to look up. Having someone else to help makes all the difference, even if it takes the kids a while to get used to another adult in the household.

Hutch is quite the capable manny, and a really nice guy. Without being intrusive, he slowly takes over the day-to-day care of the kids as well as the budgeting. He has lots of experience, after all, and he wants to make sure Adam relaxes. Hutch is one of those men who just know what to do in whatever kid-related disaster comes up. He is also loving, and begins to care for Adam in ways that are not approved in the standard manny handbook. Not that it matters – Hutch and Adam are making up their own rules for the kids as they go, so doing the same for themselves is only fair.

If you like entertaining and relaxing stories about unusual families, if getting to know a bunch of kids and their preferences and idiosyncrasies sounds like fun, and if you’re looking for a read that is warm and gentle, yet deeply passionate as the two men get to know each other better, then you will probably like this novel as much as I did.
