Once you find out your mother is an alien, what ISN'T possible?! That's what 12-year-old Anne and 10-year-old Atticus Reade want to know. Minutes after learning their mother is a Farbookonian human, not an Earth human - making them half-alien - they're whisked off to sleep-away camp in New Jersey for protection, each with a tiny Globot on one shoulder. They do their best to fit in at camp, but their sheltered existence in the Midwest didn't prepare them for this. Everything is new to them, and at every step, their unpredictable Farbookonian talents threaten to give them away. Just as they settle in, a broadcast on the Rec Hall TV shakes things up, and they begin to see what's truly strange at camp. As they race to solve a mystery involving ghost stories, quirky campers, a bizarre camp director, and a secret connection they share with their friends, only one thing is clear: They're not safe. Can the things that make Anne and Atticus different help them survive? Is this book for me? A Brief Stay at Earth Human Camp is a sci-fi, coming-of-age, mystery adventure! Author Marie C. Collins places relatable characters with alien abilities in a realistic setting that grows increasingly ominous as the story progresses. Reviewers recommend her to readers who enjoy the works of Roald Dahl, Rick Riordan, & J. K. Rowling. If you like stories that transform the ordinary into the extraordinary ... if you like characters that remind you of your friends ... if you like mysteries that keep you guessing until the final pages ... this book is for you. Book 2, The Quest for Normal, is due out soon. Thrilling and captivating!
I am amazed and thrilled at having stumbled upon Ms. Collins' work! A Brief Stay at Earth Human Camp is truly a masterful work. I am one of those grown ups who read all the Harry Potter books and still uses her kids as an excuse to go to a Disney movie. I love young adult as a genre but have found lately that the skill is lacking in so many authors to actually weave a tale. Not so for Marie Collins. This is a lovely tale of Atticus and Anne, learning who they really are, attending camp for the first time and meeting other children, also for the first time. We follow the adventure and mystery while sharing in the joys of budding friendships, the thrill of summer games and all that camp has to offer.
I don't give spoilers, but will say that this expertly woven story captured me and and kept me involved, kept me there in the pages, at camp, listening to ghost stories, hiking through Jersey woods and befriending all the children and counselors as the weeks of summer went by too quickly.
I am certain this book and following series will go far. The structure and writing are far beyond the bulk of what is on the shelves today.
Well done Marie Collins, I eagerly await the next book to find out more of the Farbookonian adventures!

Great read!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Marie's unique concept and storytelling skills moved the book along at a great pace, and had me enthralled from start to finish. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Well written, both a 58 year old and a 9 year old enjoyed it.
This was an all around well written book. Nice world building, great characters, good story. The only down side was no real ending and the next book isn't ready yet. But the book was so well done that I don't feel like I am hanging off a cliff hanger, or that I am done with the story. I just want the next book to be written. My son who is about 9 developmentally wants to know when the movie will come out. He said, while I read it to him, that he could see it in him mind. High praise from him.

A Brief Stay at Earth Human Camp: Book 1 of the Secrets of Farbookonia by Marie C. Collins
This book focuses on the inner thoughts of two unusual home-schooled teens, brother and sister, who have spent their entire lives living in isolation with their parents and groundskeeper being the only other individuals they have ever seen. Out of the blue the children are suddenly thrust into society when their folks send them off to a sleep-away camp in a desolate area of New Jersey. The story mainly centers around the difficulties of the two children, with their unusual "gifts," having been born and brought up by a dysfunctional mother who hails from another planet and a father who is a serious dabber of modern day technology and who is working on a secret project. In addition to the struggle of the two to fit in with their peers and to hide the fact that they are "different," the author also delves into the lives of the other campers who are going through similar growing pains while attempting to deal with different personalities and odd situations. Halfway through the saga, the author introduces a camp director under whose care one would never want their offspring to be charged with!

As an aside, amidst all the shenanigans and havoc some of the campers cause, Collins spices up their daredevil antics by describing, in detail, many of the facility's unusual choices for mouth-watering gourmet meals for the kids, including the meals' countries of origin. This book proves to be a fast-moving piece of fiction that inspires the imagination, manages to keep the reader's attention all the way to the last page and, with the surprise ending, leaves one looking forward to, hopefully, a sequel!

I would highly recommend this book
A very unique story! I went to camp for many years and the story rang true to my experiences! The characters are very well formed and the story is quite interesting! It took a number of twists and turns I was not expecting. It kept my interest and gave me a few laughs as well. I would highly recommend this book! (5 stars) (5 stars)
