Well, I read another book that I heard a lot of good things about it. The Illuminae Files is a series that the hype is well deserved. In my opinion, the series needs to be read visually while following the audiobook. The cast of the narrators does an excellent job, and it gave me another experience.
I really loved all of the characters. It was refreshing not to see another YA book fall down the “insta-love” rabbit hole. Instead, we see a couple who has been together for a while but opted to break up. They’re mad at each other, but you can tell there are still feelings there. The feelings develop and change throughout the book, and I liked seeing the relationship change sort of in the reverse of what I normally see. I found Kady to be a wonderfully competent character.
Although I’m generally not a huge fan of sci-fi, I loved this one. It is written really well and written, so that didn’t feel confusing on insanely far-fetched. Unlike what seems to be the majority of readers/reviewers, I wasn't enamored with AIDAN. Even after my initial dislike and wariness lessened, I still got too many creepy or weird vibes from him (especially involving Kady), which meant he never won me over completely. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ That being said, I did like being inside the mind of an A.I. character and seeing certain events play out from his perspective.
Overall, the story was quite entertained, and impressed by the creativity in how the book is relatable for young readers. Looking forward to continuing with the series. ( )

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do. This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival mega-corporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than a speck at the edge of the universe. Now with enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra — who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to evacuate with a hostile warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A plague has broken out and is mutating with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a web of data to find the truth, it’s clear the only person who can help her is the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents — including emails, maps, files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more — Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

Review
Kady Grant is everything you want in the main character. She’s smart as a whip, witty and a hacker with a rebellious side. She doesn’t deal with authoritative figures well and she has a plate full of issues. It’s the year 2575 and the two megacorporations BeiTech and the UTA are at war with each other when Beitech’s battleship The Lincoln attacks the colony Kerneza IV which just happens to be an illegal mining colony of the Kerenza System.Kady thought breaking up with Ezra Mason, her newly former lover would be what she would be worrying about for days to come until a missile flies over their school and starts to destroy everything. The UTA comes to the rescue of the residents of the Kerenza IV and Kady and Ezra both board The Hypatia, a scientific exploration vessel of the UTA and The Alexander, a UTA battleship respectively.Aboard The Hypatia, Kady and her new friend Byron Zhang use their hacking to unravel the secrets aboard the battleships, the reality behind AIDAN, the AI created by the UTA and discover a class Alpha Zero pathogen released by BeiTech industries that the UTA was trying to cover up.I think this book is one of its kind written through hacked documents full of emails, IM’s, maps, files, drawings, medical reports, interviews and is a must-read for anyone who’s a fan of Sci-Fi. The ending was stunning. And it wouldn't be nearly as touching if you hadn't suffered through the extreme overdose of foul language that was the narrators of the first three quarters of the book.
First it was mainly just the computer talking and he only used that sort of language when mimicking someone.
Then the actual end. The last fifteen minutes of the audiobook. Hope is restored. The rest of the series is teased. And you learn that all of the sadness that came just before is for naught.
So yeah... ( )

This book is awesome. I didn't have it figured out at all. Everything was fresh for me. It's in the future. People are in space. It's the files of a tragedy and a sort of government or company cover-up. But this is the files of what really happened and fighting back. The AI aspect is so interesting also, the way that it becomes so human. ( )

No One Hears You Scream In Space....

Some of you may be too young to know that reference, but holy moly is it appropriate for this book! I recommend everyone go grab this book as soon as possible. It is Ender's Game, Aliens, War World Z, 2001 Space Odyssey, all together, rolled up into one fantastic, heart-stropping, scary as hell, novel.

When I first begun this book I was really afraid that my interest wan't going to be held because the formatting seemed a bit cheesy to me. It's presented like a case file for an investigation with supporting documentation, photos, emails, and correspondences. If you think about it, it's a brilliant way to present this story, but if you had less talented writers who focused more on the gimmick you would end up with a sub-par novel. However, you have Amie Kaufman and Jay Krisoff at the helm, and so we end up with a thought provoking, well crafted, and immensely intriguing story that is presented in a creative way.

The story starts off with the destruction of a planet. Then we have a ever so slow, but always present chance across space. All the while, you have mechanical breakdowns, glitchey computers, virus outbreaks, and the people in charge trying to manage this all during war-time scenarios occurring. Civilians are being conscripted for service, and people are starting to get scared. This brings us to our main characters, Kady is really good with computers, and Ezra landed a position as a flight pilot. Through their on going texts and emails the story is told.

All these components could go really wrong, but in this book created by these amazing writers, it all works. It works so much better than I could've imagined possible. I was scared, I was concerned, and the story continued...

This is the first book in what is set to be a series of three books, and I will be waiting for each new book. If someone approached me saying they never really read or enjoyed science fiction, this is the book I would direct them to for a chance to change their heart. I highly recommend this book.
