"A magnum opus for our morally complex times from the author of Freedom Young Pip Tyler doesn't know who she is. She knows that her real name is Purity, that she's saddled with $130,000 in student debt, that she's squatting with anarchists in Oakland, and that her relationship with her mother--her only family--is hazardous. But she doesn't have a clue who her father is, why her mother has always concealed her own real name, or how she can ever have a normal life. Enter the Germans. A glancing encounter with a German peace activist leads Pip to an internship in South America with The Sunlight Project, an organization that traffics in all the secrets of the world--including, Pip hopes, the secret of her origins. TSP is the brainchild of Andreas Wolf, a charismatic provocateur who rose to fame in the chaos following the fall of the Berlin Wall. Now on the lam in Bolivia, Andreas is drawn to Pip for reasons she doesn't understand, and the intensity of her response to him upends her conventional ideas of right and wrong. Purity is a dark-hued comedy of youthful idealism, extreme fidelity, and murder. The author of The Corrections and Freedom has created yet another cast of vividly original characters, Californians and East Germans, good parents and bad parents, journalists and leakers, and he follows their intertwining paths through landscapes as contemporary as the omnipresent Internet and as ancient as the war between the sexes. Jonathan Franzen is a major author of our time, and Purity is his edgiest and most searching book yet"--… (més)

I won this book for review from the publisher from Goodreads Firstreads.

It's taken me twenty four hours after reading this to put my thoughts together about this book enough to even begin to review it. The first hundred pages I loved, I was ready for a great story. But I was so let down. I have never been so disappointed with how a story was written as I was with Purity. There was a genius novel buried here, it was so obvious that there was. It started off so strong and the overall plot was good. Great, even. But it was covered up by so much uh.. stuff that I couldn't enjoy it in the way I really wish I could have.

We follow Pip, our supposed main character. Which I suppose is true, but really only half of these 300 pages are from Pip's perspective and theres two entire parts of the novel where her name isn't even uttered. I understand why, but I couldn't help but feel a bit cheated, especially when the POV was Andreas. Was he important? Yes. Did I like him? No. Would I have enjoyed his parts more if he was a bit more bearable or if it wasn't all so boring? Of course. But no doubt, Pip is the main character. She was the beginning, middle and end of this book. But most of what was in between I didn't like. I enjoyed Toms POV quite a bit, and his story was a welcome break in Pip's own story. That was another 80 or so pages I enjoyed. But again, I felt that with so many parts to this book, and only 3 being from our protagonist that everything going on with her plot development was always being pushed aside and I was forgetting things about her that I needed to remember for later in the book.

Again, I will say that this book could have and should have been genius, and maybe once I've had more time I'll change my rating. I enjoyed Franzen's writing for the most part, but I feel he took on too many issues with this book and it really did show.

A Human Portrait

I was really surprised by this novel, which is why I was compelled to give 5 stars ... I'm emotionally attached to it. The multi-character narration has always appealed to me, and aids my ability to understand diverse perspectives in real life.

I'll definitely read more of his books, including his non-fiction. ( )
