Baru Cormorant believes any price is worth paying to liberate her people--even her soul. When the Empire of Masks conquers her island home, overwrites her culture, criminalizes her customs, and murders one of her fathers, Baru vows to swallow her hate, join the Empire's civil service, and claw her way high enough to set her people free. Sent as an Imperial agent to distant Aurdwynn, another conquered country, Baru discovers it's on the brink of rebellion. Drawn by the intriguing Duchess Tain Hu into a circle of seditious dukes, Baru may be able to use her position to help. As she pursues a precarious balance between the rebels and a shadowy cabal within the Empire, she orchestrates a do-or-die gambit with freedom as the prize. But the cost of winning the long game of saving her people may be far greater than Baru imagines.… (més)

I spent the entire book restraining myself from some intense googling because I couldn't believe it was written by a white man. Which is a huge compliment. Apparently this is what the fantasy genre has been doing in the corner since I abandoned it a decade ago for scifi.
So, colonizers come, take a brown girl from her parents and put her in a boarding school, release a plague, and try to civilize her. She goes along with it while planning to burn them all down. I was deeply, irrevocably invested by the first ten pages. Read until my eyes didn't work, slept, then did it again.
Is it a good book? I'm not entirely sure about that, there are a few tropes I didn't quite care for, some unnecessary cruelties I felt were a bit too on display. But in general? Dayum.
(It's his FIRST book! (Still, kinda, unconvinced it's by a man.) ( )

Oh man, I could see some of the ending coming, but I admit that I had several theories going as to which conclusion the book would come to, and couldn't decide which. It was beautiful, it was great. Once I got to 75% or so, I was on tenterhooks. That ending was just about everything I could have wanted.

Still giving it a 4 or 4.5, because it did bog down a bit. Oddly enough, it was in discussing battle tactics, not economics (which is not the complaint I've seen most reviewers make).

I didn't always read as closely as I should have, but Dickinson was good enough to just point out later what I'd missed, and not to emphasize it too much at the time. This held through the book, which was *awesome*.

Baru isn't necessarily an unreliable narrator, but she's a chessmaster playing amongst other chessmasters, so she doesn't always come to the correct conclusion when reading a situation. Since she is a sympathetic protagonist, I'm okay with this (for example, I'm *not* okay with Cersei's POV in a Feast for Crows. I actually had to force my way through her chapters. This is absolutely a question of preference).

In fact, it was usually really cool when she would be schooled, because she's still not stupid! She would immediately spell out what the problem was, and continue in her new, more difficult situation.

This is definitely a slow burn kind of book. Intrigue upon intrigue, and everybody making guesses at motivation. I don't think that it really got into the nitty-gritty of accounting, since I could follow along, but it was enough scale that I was happy. ( )

I was recommended this book by a friend, and it was a wild ride that I was not quite prepared for. This is convoluted, idea-driven fantasy at its height, featuring a complex set of characters, societies, and motivations. I was particularly here for canonically queer female characters and polyamorous societies. PLEASE SAVE THE FATHERS. ( )

Ugh, I had such high hopes. I sooo liked the idea of "i'll get enough power in your goddamn empire to revenge my homeland". I also liked the final twist, I really hoped for something like that to happen (especially considering the very promising titles of the next two books in the series).
But god, this book was NOT good. Sorry, next two books of the series, I'm not reading you now.

I hated the writing style, just hated it. It was as nuanced and elegant as a brick.
Things just sorta happened and the characters just sorta made decisions based on whatever. I often caught myself thinking that I have NO IDEA what's going on in this scene, what's the point of this dialogue, how we got here and why nothing makes sense.

I think I'll just go and check the plot on wikipedia cause I'm curious whether Baru really turns into a monster / tyrant (almost Daenerys-like) but I just cannot bear to read another whole book of THIS. ( )

Interesting fantasy world-building, but not really my cuppa. ( )
