In Margaret Coel's latest Wind River Reservation mystery, Arapaho attorney Vicky Holden and Father John O'Malley find themselves immersed in the dark underbelly of the illegal market for Indian relics. The Arapahos call it "The Drowning Man"-an ancient petroglyph depicting the haunting image of a human figure struggling under water. A priceless artifact to the tribe, the sacred object is worth a quarter of a million dollars to the thieves who took it. After receiving the ransom demand, Father John is determined to uncover the identity of the culprits and recover the petroglyph. The theft is nearly identical to an unsolved seven-year-old case involving another stolen petroglyph-and manslaughter. Vicky joins Father John to piece together the events of the past seven years. But their quest will put them in the path of a relentless killer who will stop at nothing to remain unknown.… (més)

This was a very long book, about 11 hours, and after 12 books, the formula wears: Vicki was too sick; she had two auto accidents; she risked herself to defend someone against injustice; blah-blah. Meanwhile, Father John has staff problems....again. And, we hear about the stolen petroglyphs ad Infiniti. And, a white guy is the perp....again. This book would be pretty good at about 6-7 hours. This is part of the Wind River Mystery series with Father John O'Malley and Vicki Holden. Seven years ago someone chipped a very old petroglyph from the cliff walls where it had been for over 1000 years. Travis Birdsong was suspected of being one of the thieves and it was assumed that he had a fight with his partner, Raymond Trueblood, and killed Trueblood because of it. That petroglyph wasn't found. Now another one is missing, the one called Drowning Man. The tribe considers these to be representative of the spirits. LIke 7 years ago, a mysterious Indian man tries to get the tribe to cough up the ransom money or the stole petroglyph will be sold to a collector. Vicki Holden questions Birdsong's guilt and takes up his case and then attempts are made to kill her. Father John is asked by his superior to take in a retired priest only to find out why the church is hiding the old priest. I like this series.

Another good book in the Wind River mystery series. It's a slow read but I enjoy learning about the Arapaho people. ( )

Stolen petroglyphs and a retired priest threaten the tribes and the mission on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming in another thoughtful, well-done mystery that includes aspects of Arapaho Indian history. ( )
