"When people look at George, they think they see a boy. But she knows she's not a boy. She knows she's a girl. George thinks she'll have to keep this a secret forever. Then her teacher announces that their class play is going to be Charlotte's Web. George really, really, REALLY wants to play Charlotte. But the teacher says she can't even try out for the part . . . because she's a boy. With the help of her best friend, Kelly, George comes up with a plan. George has a secret, but her desire to be Charlotte in the class play, Charlotte’s Web, pushes her to be open about who she really is.

4 Stars - updated after reflection - writing maybe a little young/simple for target ages but still really solid and incredible important; highly recommended -

This is such a wonderful book! It is heartache inducing and warm and hopeful all at the same time. Most important is the hope - hope that all people need but especially children and youth - that things will be okay no matter who you are because who you are is not just okay, but good!

As a book the narrative is solid, engaging, and believable. The characters are well developed and even those that see little stage time show unique depth. The subject matter is so important (transgender youth) but the story is so much more than that and youth and adults alike all have things to learn from George. Read it! ( )

children's fiction (transgender 4th grader, well before puberty and all the things tangled up with that). Great to see this perspective offered for kids who never see their stories told (and for those of us who might offer support to such kids). ( )

I can see why so many people love this book. George is a girl. She knows she is a girl. However, everyone in her family and at school see her as a biological boy. George’s deepest desire is to live as herself, but to also be Charlotte in the school play. But Charlotte the spider is a girl's part. So that may not happen. I love how open Geroge’s best friend is. She is caring and loving, and once told is all on board with George and helps Melissa come out into the world. I wish the mom was a bit more supportive. We see her tell George that she doesn’t want one of “those” boys - i.e a boy in girls clothes. As a reader you feel it's because she wants George to have an easy life, but she doesn’t realize how uneasy their life is now. I know there are some who think this book should not exist at all, and others who think it should exist, but still find it problematic. I am not one of those people. Overall I really liked and enjoyed this book. I just thought it ended in a weird place. Almost like one of those after school specials from the late 80. It was abrupt. The story is done and over, but I wanted to know more and had so many questions left unanswered. I do know there is a sequel called Rick who was the school bully in this book, so I think I am going to check that out as well. ( )
