"When people look at George, they think they see a boy. But she knows she's not a boy. She knows she's a girl. George thinks she'll have to keep this a secret forever. Then her teacher announces that their class play is going to be Charlotte's Web. George really, really, REALLY wants to play Charlotte. But the teacher says she can't even try out for the part . . . because she's a boy. With the help of her best friend, Kelly, George comes up with a plan. Melissa is a girl that everyone perceives to be a boy named George. She has always known she was a girl, but has never spoken the words allowed. Not even to her best friend Kelly. This is her story, of how she navigates her world, and finally lets out to her best friend, brother, and mother who she is. This was a second read for me. I had first read this back in 2019 or 2020 via the audiobook and just fell in love. The performance in the audiobook was fantastic and really brought you into the story. I felt this was a good time to re-read and decided to read the eBook the second time around. It was just as powerful, and I was able to pay closer attention to the subtleties of the story. Alex Gino’s writing is exquisite and made the book enjoyable. Though this was a middle grade book, the writing was on par with adult fiction. This is a great book for really anyone. ( )

DNF. P. 62. I was reading this as part of my " banned books" reading resolution but just could not continue. Terribly simplistic writing, no character development, gender stereotypes, etc. ( )

The part that struck me most was just an aside that wasn't even relevant to the plot: George hates gym class. I used to be glad I was a girl *specifically because it was okay to hate gym class and no one would make fun of me or make me try very hard.* Poor George. If one of the purposes of literature is to create empathy in the reader, Gino nailed it.

As for refusing to provide copies to Wichita elementary schools, well. There is a small amount of mild teenage-boy vulgarity from George's older brother and oblique, non-graphic allusions to George's genitalia. In other words, about what you would expect of an embarrassed 4th grader who feels like she doesn't fit in her body. Trying to ignore the experiences of kids like George because that experience is so intimately tied to the body is not a useful solution. ( )

This book is exceptionally relevant, I'll give you that.
It should be in every library.

It's a good story. These are real people.
You should read it. And pass it along. ( )

From a book list for my daughter's class in Children's Literature...I decided to try this one first, based solely on the fact that it was the latest book published on the list. George was born a boy but by the 4th grade she is coming to the real conclusion that she is really a girl. Not gay, that she knows of right now, but definitely not a boy. It is a quick and simple read, but I am not sure what the age of the audience should/would be. In my head, I kept seeing George and her bullies in junior high. I know things happen much earlier these days, but I also work with 4th graders often and am not sure they would be as aware as George is. However, I knew a kindergartener who knew her physical gender did not match who she was inside. I think it would be a great story given to the correct reader, not necessarily a read-aloud in front of the whole class. I enjoyed George and her best friend Kelly. I appreciated the reactions of George's family because I felt they were honest. It is never easy to be different; parents know this and want to protect their children from a cruel world. I wish there would have been a post-visit to the principal's office.... ( )
