I really enjoyed this! I'm never big on stories about the spirit world but this one was really cool, plus we got some much-needed closure for Toph. ( )

Set's up the seeds for the legend of korra season 2 plotlines, and give great character development on Toph and Aang ( )

The story is not as lively as previous entries, but Gene Luen Yang continues to keep the franchise alive by capturing the depth and voices of the Avatar world. ( )

Like the first Avatar graphic novel, The Promise, The Rift deals with weighty stuff but still somehow feels light. Yang does a good job of capturing the characters' voices, but doesn't always peg their essences, I think. Part of the problem is that these stories meander a little bit too much (aside from The Search), diluting their potential emotional heft. I feel like the television story could have done this in 25 minutes, and yet The Rift is 238 pages long. It's not terrible by any means, but it's hard to shake the feeling that it ought to be better than it is. Still, time spent with these characters is always well spent, and I look forward to spending more of it with them in future volumes.

This collection of comics based on Avatar: The Last Airbender follows on from the previous stories "The Promise" and "The Search." I didn't find it quite as compelling as those earlier volumes. I think it feels a lot slighter, although that seems a bit odd to say, given that it features some fairly important character stuff for Toph, some strong themes about balancing between the past and the future, and at least one truly impressive action sequence. But it kind of does, anyway. Some of the character conflict (and resolution) feels a little artificial, too, and there's a bad guy who's more cartoony than Avatar usually goes in for, even if it is actually a cartoon. But there are also some pretty great moments, including a funny appearance from everybody's favorite cabbage merchant, and a touching scene involving one of Aang's past lives.

Overall, I'd say it's the equivalent of a decent-but-not-outstanding episode of the TV show. Which, of course, is still really darned high-quality. And it was great to see these characters and their world again, in any case. It's been a few months since I finished watching the show, and I was starting to miss them. I really, really need to go and watch Legend of Korra now. Especially as a lot of things in this story were clearly intended to tie into it... ( )
