love the tough love episode.... not your usual YA fantasy novel. ( )

Great quick light classic fantasy book. I found this laying around the house as a part of my "read everything I own challenge" and I'm glad I did. Can't wait to read the next two/few. ( )

When I was younger I was foolish to think I didn't really like fantasy all that much. Wizards? Hobbits? Spells? Dragons? Bah, give me good science fiction. As a result, I missed a lot of good stuff like Ursula K. Le Guin and the Earthsea Trilogy. I'm on my way to fixing the errors of my youth, and especially after watching a PBS show about Le Guin.

I picked this one up at Munroe's Books on a trip to Victoria. This was a marvelous book originally published in 1968. Intended for older children--sort of a proto young adult novel. The book follows the origin story of Ged/Sparrowhawk who is destined to be a great wizard. It follows him through his first lessons, his first grave error, his wizard school and the quests he undertakes to fix it. The book is spare--it is less than 250 pages long but the prose and the action descriptive.

Here is the wonderful first line, "The Island of Gont, a single mountain that lifts, its peak a mile above the storm-racked Northeast Sea, is a land famous for wizards."

The publisher included an afterword from Le Guin about the writing and publication of the book which is a well-worth read for an aspiring author or book history buff. And--she talks about the characters of the book being of color and how she slipped that and a few "subversive" themes into a book of that publication time.

And what is it about the Pacific Northwest that produces such wonderful fantasy writers? Ursula Le Guin, Patricia McKillip, and Robin Hobb, three of my favorites are all from Oregon and Washington. If like me, you've missed out on fantasy, I'd start with these three. ( )

This book was first published in 1969-it is the first in a series of award winning books. In my adventure to read older fantasy, I came upon this book.

This is the story of Gen-who really could be the "early" Harry Potter"-he is born with powers, is trained first by a witch, then a wizard steps in and then he is off to the School for Wizards. While at the school, we only meet 2 other students-one his arch-rival, the other his friend. In a fit of " I am better than you" Gen mistakenly calls forth a dark Shadow, and it is let loose into the world. From there the story follows Gen around the world of Earthsea, as he first tries to escape the Shadow, then tries to destroy it.

Actually, you could call this a "coming of age" story...Gen learns all the lessons that are hard to learn, and grows and becomes a better man, a better wizard.

Ursula Guin could write-her prose just flowed-for that alone I would like to have given this 5 stars, however I never really got emotionally attached to Gen, the protagonist. And I was confused why at this school did we only know the names of 2 other students? ( and then again, it was a short book, and a lot of action was packed into it-I guess there just wasn't room for more characters?)

I will continue the series, it grabbed me enough to pull me in.

This was a GR Sci-Fi & Fantasy Book Club Select and one that I had read while still in High School; it remains one of my favorites to this day (I liked it much better then [b:the Lord of the Rings|34|The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, #1)|J.R.R. Tolkien|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1298411339l/34._SX50_.jpg|3204327]), although I chose not to reread it for the club discussion. The book is the first of an original trilogy; with a forth added much later that I have not yet read. Taken together, the entire quartet would probable equal the page count typically seen in a single novel today; to its benefit.

Le Guin packs a well constructed fantasy world, character development and a fair amount of action to keep the story moving along, leaving the tedious details to the readers imagination. EarthSea itself seemed designed for peoples with an intimate connection to the seas; something I had always fancied for myself growing upon around the boats and marinas of the Chesapeake Bay. From the beginning I was able to make the world of EarthSea my own. The people of EarthSea seemed to be a wonderful combination of exotic Pacific Islanders and barbarian Vikings, fitting right in with my independent study of ancient peoples mythology and migration (though I was more interested in the indo-europeans at the time). This gave the whole story the feel of ancient, oral tradition that was so fun to play with. The magic of EarthSea was my first introduction to the concept of naming, balance and sympathetic forces; to this day I believe it makes more sense then nearly any other system I have encountered (: if only it were really true :).

When I first encountered the main character, SparrowHawk, I didn't like him very much; and, even as a young teen myself, I couldn't really identify with him. Fortunately he had a few things going for him ... He wasn't particularly evil or bad, just overly arrogant, willful, and still relatively naïve (unlike some other protagonists who shall remain nameless but whose initials are Thomas Covenant and Richard Cypher-Rahl) and he actually develops to overcome much what makes me dislike him by the end ... Truly a hero's journey. ( )

The wise man is one who never sets himself apart from other living things, whether they have speech or not, and in later years he strove long to learn what can be learned, in silence, from the eyes of animals, the flight of birds, the great slow gestures of trees.
It is very hard for evil to take hold of the unconsenting soul.
