Why on earth would they title this collection after the story in the collection that's not even the strongest? I mean, it's an interesting tale of murder and motivation, but "the Canterville Ghost" was a much more interesting tale. It tells us of a determined ghost, curses to haunt the Canterille manse until God forgives him for murdering his wife, who runs into a rather intrepid American family who refuses to put up with his nonsense. Obviously Wilde is making a farce of the then-current trends towards ridiculous spiritualism and fantasy, tempering his theme with American rationalism, which makes for some hilarious scenarios as the ghost becomes ever-more hindered in his efforts to spook the family. The conclusion is a happy one by the end, as the youngest daughter takes pity on the ghost and helps him pass on to his next life. I was never really crazy about The Picture of Dorian Grey. I read it and it wasn't bad but not as good as I expected it would be (based on raving reviews by friends). However, I was quite curious to this little story I hadn't heard about and since it's very short it can be easily read in a single sitting. And actually I really like it. It had a nice twist at the end, but I won't tell you too much about the story for fear of spoiling the story. However, I would recommend it as a nice quick read!
