"The physics of vulnerability is simple: If we are brave enough often enough, we will fall. The author of the #1 New York Times bestsellers Daring Greatly and The Gifts of Imperfection tells us what it takes to get back up, and how owning our stories of disappointment, failure, and heartbreak gives us the power to write a daring new ending. Struggle, Brene Brown writes, can be our greatest call to courage, and rising strong our clearest path to a wholehearted life"-- "With her 2010 TED talk on the power of vulnerability (over 18 million views), her bestselling books on the transformative gifts of shame and vulnerability, and her inspiring call for wholehearted living, Brene Brown has changed the cultural conversation. Her work has been embraced by Oprah Winfrey and corporate leaders alike making her a highly sought after public speaker. For Brene, the conversation about vulnerability and shame naturally evolves into a discussion of bravery--its origins, its catalysts, its chemistry. How we are brave. What constitutes bravery. What activates the impulse to be brave. And how to recognize where our own "hero's journey" begins--in the depths of failure, disappointment, heartbreak, and grief--and how, once we grapple with our story, we are able to rise from those depths and determine how we want our story will end"--… (més)

While Daring Greatly focuses on vulnerability, Rising Strong takes a look at this too, but adds on compassion, curiosity, love, generosity and more as a route to happiness and integrity. A few months out I can't say I remember much about this book verbatim, but my Myers Briggs did change from "Thinking" to "Feeling", so I think it had a bigger impact than I can put into words. ( )

I have read Brown's last three books, and also have seen and heard her in a number of presentations and interviews. I find there to be a deep meaning in her message. Often, I can find connections into my own life.

Some find her writing and storytelling repetitive. That does not bother me. Like a Malcom Gladwell book, she wrote variations on a theme. So I skim them to see what resonates, taking in the major message and not getting lost in the details.

As Brown continues to teach us how to overcome shame and to embrace vulnerability, this book is all about those moments of failure. We all fail. How we handle that failure tests our character. Brown's book is an opportunity to reflect on this for ourselves. ( )

An interesting and inspiring exploration of how we perceive, interrogate, and grow from failure. Definitely something I needed to read as an adjunct professor. ( )

I’m not even sure where to begin. This book has brought up so many thoughts and desires to find solutions for areas in which I want to rise strong and be brave. Lots of food for thought.

Yes, Brown shares a lot of personal anecdotes. (I remember reading a review where the reader didn’t care for that.)

I’m ok with it and here’s why. Brown is a researcher and without anecdotes, all we would have is history and facts and those tend not to stick in our brains or feel applicable to our lives. Personal stories though? Yep.

Admittedly I’m left feeling a little anchor-less right now. The book brought up a lot of stuff I want to work through but I admit to not knowing where to begin or feeling like I have the energy to begin and I also feel a lot of fear around diving in to the work.

Usually this means I need to devote time to the thoughts and maybe do some more emotional and practical fact finding. If I have any amazing breakthroughs, I’ll surely let y’all know. :)

I read this via "Libby, by Overdrive", borrowed from the Toronto Public Library. I'm buying too many books, so I'm trying to borrow more.

I gave it 4 stars because I felt it could have been a bit more succinct in places. Nonetheless, it's a great book and I recommend it. Brown's vulnerable approach is refreshing, and her stories are relatable. I'm glad I took the time to read it, and that she wrote it. ( )
