Book Recommendation #9

The best book on preaching I've read from someone outside of my convictional stream. I particularly benefitted from Keller's experience preaching in NYC where - because of the rampant postmodernist thinking - he faithfully exposited the Scriptures AND ALSO brought them to bear on the real lives of real people in ways that prevented them tossing the truth claims aside. Read this book if you are a preacher, teacher, or lay leader, or are interested in encouraging those you know who are doing these things. Very useful and very readable. ( )

Extremely well done. This is not step by step instruction of how to prepare a sermon. It reviews how to engage the heart, focus on the Gospel, and speak with relevance. This is definitely worth reading again. ( )

By far, this is my least favorite of Tim Keller's books. Having said that, it bears out that Keller is one of my favorite authors.

I think he takes a far too philosophical approach in writing this text. It reads like a seminary text book. Perhaps that was his audience, but the wonderful nuggets of truth contained in this book are lost in the endless philosophy quotes.

There are better books on preaching. I would encourage you to start elsewhere if you are a new minister looking for help. If you do take the journey, don't miss the footnotes. Much of his best material is found there. ( )

Don't be deceived. This isn't a long book, but there's a lot in here. And don't forget the footnotes. They are golden! A lot of outstanding viewpoints. Point to Jesus and end the sermon with what Jesus has done for us, with Gospel, rather than moralizing, or Law. I felt right at home! And especially in a skeptical age, concentrating on Jesus will overcome a lot of negative and skeptical misconceptions. This is a wonderful book - one of the best I've read this year. ( )

If you're familiar with Keller's ministry in NYC, you'll know that he emphasizes preaching culturally relevant, gospel- and Christ-centered, expositional sermons. Those are the main flavors that you get in this book. While this probably shouldn't be the first book on preaching you hand to someone, it is a helpful tool for pastors who want to improve in the craft of preaching.

In particular, the middle section, which discusses how to preach to a Western culture filled with people who embrace modernity and postmodernity, is what sets this book apart from other preaching books. Keller is excellent at outlining the common cultural narratives in our society, and he gives preachers advice on how to graciously affirm and confront those narratives with the gospel.

In summary, I'd say that this book is worth reading for those who regularly preach the Word. I came away with quality insights about how I can do a better job of applying the gospel to the common mindsets and issues that face those living in our culture. ( )
