"Four months have passed since the shadow stone fell into Kell's possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Rhy was wounded and the Dane twins fell, and the stone was cast with Holland's dying body through the rift, and into Black London. In many ways, things have almost returned to normal, though Rhy is more sober, and Kell is now plagued by his guilt. Restless, and having given up smuggling, Kell is visited by dreams of ominous magical events, waking only to think of Lila, who disappeared from the docks like she always meant to do. As Red London finalizes preparations for the Element Games-an extravagant international competition of magic, meant to entertain and keep healthy the ties between neighboring countries-a certain pirate ship draws closer, carrying old friends back into port. But while Red London is caught up in the pageantry and thrills of the Games, another London is coming back to life, and those who were thought to be forever gone have returned. After all, a shadow that was gone in the night reappears in the morning, and so it seems Black London has risen again-and so to keep magic's balance, another London must fall"--… (més)

I got so bored with the first volume that I gave it and the other two away without reading further. I have not done that very often, but this sereiesjust did not grip. I will probably think about why for a while, but just now I really can not say what did not work for me. I am becoming picky about series. ( )

Blog Review: https://trishadoeseverythingbutstudy2.wordpress.com/2021/01/01/my-december-in-bo...

Reviewer's Note: Fair warning, this was written when I was supposed to be sleeping, and I've only made it readable and understandable. All thoughts written here are unedited, and might not make sense. But I don't care.

Editor's Note: What the f*ck is half of this?!?! I hate my phone's keyboard.

I'm tired. I'm sleepy. Why am I writing this? Because this book has one job. Just one. I have no idea what that job was, but it definitely wasn't this.

The first problem I had with this was the amount of time this took to get to the point. I'm not saying all those chapters with what everyone's doing and how they're suffering weren't good,, but that they weren't what I wanted. At all.

It took 75% of the book to get to the point where Kell and Lila actually meet. 75%. I'm not saying I wasn't here for the other characters I'd loved, namely Rhy, but I was definitely mainly here for Lila and Kell. And it took 75% for there to be Lila-Kell.

Besides that, this book was basically Lila-Lila-Kell-Kell-Rhy-Holland-Some-Black-Shi-Ojka-Holland-Lila-Lila-Lila-Kell-Rhy-Kell-Rhy-Lila and so on and so forth but there was no Lila-Kell

Basically this book was not a good sequel. It was a good book but a bad sequel, because the only reason I want to read the next one is because there was a cliffhanger. I have literally zero motivation to read it otherwise. Zero. Zilch. Nada.

Other parts of this book were....not boring....but just not what I wanted. I liked Alucard, wanted to see more of Rhy, wanted to understand what the f*ck was going on in White London and for the King and Queen to start behaving like they were in the previous book...basically like good parents who love Kell and I hated that they hated him so much in this and they were not seeing how much Kell was suffering.

Also I currently have this theory that Kell and other Antari might be from Black London(because the eyes are black?!) and maybe that Kell parents are seriously important for some reason. And that there is more to Lila's capability and that I really wanted some good romance from this like the previous one but there was like nothing. I don't think was much romance in the previous book either, but there was so much potential.

I also didn't like that the setting was just so different from the previous one. This was supposed to be about the tournament, but there was just so little of the tournament in the end.

What else even was in this book. I loved the crew and hope we get to see more of them, and Lila and Kell working out whatever it is between them, and Rhy and Alucard to get some good scenes, and Ojka and Holland to just die because I am just so tired. I am so tired and I have no idea why I am writing this except that I want to sleep and this thing had me really frustrated.

On the whole it was just okay, and probably the only reason this has 4 stars instead of three is that this was a bad sequel but a good book....in fact this was exactly what I liked the first book for. But I really wish everything gets sorted out in the next book. ( )

I picked this book up right after I finished A Darker Shade of Magic. Everything was fresh in my mind. This book did not disappoint. It continued the excitement after the first book left. The readers were introduced to new characters and exciting events.

The characters Kell, Lila, and Ryh continued to grow as the book went on. Issues and previous flaws from the previous book continued its impact in this book. Ryh ended up having a bigger role along with the royal family, with responsibilities of being the heir and soul bound to Kell, which is taking a toll on everyone. Ryh’s previous love life comes into play, which digs deeper in his character. Kell is dealing with events that happened in the first book was nice to see knowing the time between books was not long.

I enjoy seeing all this with trilogies or tightly written series. It makes me as a reader feel like it is an actual continuation and not okay forget all of that and let us go in this direction which I have read trilogies and series like that before.

In A Darker Shade of Magic, Kell was the focal point. I am glad Lila was the main focal point in this one as she was instantly my favorite. It was interesting to learn with her toll on using magic and seeing her grow as a magician and a character.

What was exciting was The Essen Tasch. I wish to read more on this, but it was exciting to read an Olympic like games in this world. Because of this, readers learn the exciting other kingdoms in this world. And learn more of how the magic is like a second nature. We learn most of the rules and landscapes of the arena through Lila’s eyes, and I enjoyed that. They treat these competitors like star athletes in our world. It was an interesting concept on how things worked, and it did not feel at all off from what we know about how magic works in this world. Lila gives off a whole alternative way of fighting in the arena which again, made it interesting.

We get new characters. They are a great add to this story and helps the character (s) they interact with involve and grow. They felt well rounded for their roll, and I hope; we see them in the last book.

I recommend this book to anyone who liked the A Darker Shade of Magic, loves fantasy, and anything magic. It was a fun change from the first novel with the darkness still lurking its ugly head.

the second book in the 'shades of magic' series...and read about two years after i read the first ones....

this one barely had a plot...but the world of the different Londons, and the characters and the relationships between them...its just so much fun to read. and it actually made me excited to read the final book in the trilogy. delilah bard and kell are very compelling! ( )

Magic and magician must between them balance. Magic itself is chaos. The magician must be calm. A fractured self is a poor vessel for power, spilling power without focus or measure from every crack.
