"We assume we know our bodies intimately, but for many of us they remain uncharted territory. How many of us understand the way seizures affect the brain, how the heart is connected to wellbeing, or the why the foot carries the key to our humanity? In Adventures in Human Being, award-winning author Gavin Francis leads readers on a journey into the hidden pathways of the human body, offering a guide to its inner workings and a celebration of its marvels. Drawing on his experiences as a surgeon, ER specialist, and family physician, Francis blends stories from the clinic with episodes from medical history, philosophy, and literature to describe the body in sickness and in health, in living and in dying. At its heart, Adventures in Human Being is a meditation on what it means to be human. Poetic, eloquent, and profoundly perceptive, this book will transform the way you view your body."-- "We all have plenty of long-held ideas about our bodies, but for many of us our bodies remain uncharted territory. In Adventures in Human Being, physician and award-winning author Gavin Francis leads readers on a journey into the hidden pathways of the human body, from the brain's pea-sized pineal gland--the so-called "seat of the soul"--to the delicate machinery of the hand, and from the cranium to the calcaneum, the largest bone in the foot. Drawing on his work as a General Practitioner in Scotland, as well as his experiences traveling and practicing medicine in Africa, Asia, Antarctica, and the Arctic, Francis blends case studies, first-hand accounts, and episodes from medical history, philosophy, and literature to reveal not only what can go wrong with our bodies, but also how our ideas about our anatomy have evolved. Mirroring the structure of classic anatomy books, Adventures in Human Being proceeds from the brain down to the feet, stopping along the way to reflect on how seizures occur, what vertigo really means, and why kidney transplants work. At its heart, Adventures in Human Being is a reflection on what it means to be human: for behind each disease, degeneration, or miraculous recovery lies a story of suffering and survival, lucky and unlucky, fragile and resilient. Poetic, eloquent and profoundly perceptive, Adventures in Human Being will transform the way you view your body"--… (més)

Analyzes various parts of the human body from an historical context

A Scottish GP introduces human anatomy to the public. This was an easy read or listen with lots of interesting stories about anatomy and medicine, structured system by system. Clearly presented, entertaining, and engaging. Not a huge amount of depth or comprehensiveness, but everything that was here was good. ( )

Somehow I've had a bit of a run on medical non-fiction books this quarter (all of which have been hugely interesting, even to someone who could only manage a C in GCSE Biology).

Adventures in Human Being is written by a British GP who takes us on an interesting jaunt through the human body from tip to toe. Francis has an interesting approach of mixing modern medical knowledge with occasional forays into medical practices and superstitions from the past or from other geographies (such as how different cultures over the ages have treated afterbirth).

For most of the body parts he tells us about a particular case he dealt with affecting that body part - some are funny, whilst other are sad realities of common deaths (such as the elderly lady who dies after breaking her hip in a fall). Some others are a hypochondriac's nightmare (the young gardener who ends up in intensive care after pricking her finger on a rose bush).

This was a book nicely handled for the non-scientific reader - chapters just the right length, and a nice mix of the clinical and the emotional impact of those clinical diagnoses on the affected patients.

4 stars - I wonder if I could scrape to a B now in that GCSE.... ( )

A pleasing collection of essays on various human anatomical parts, easily digestible (ha!) in small portions. A recommended diversion for the curious mind. ( )

That thrice-worthy Mercury calls man a great Miracle, a Creature like the Creator, the Ambassador of the Gods. Pythagoras the Measure of all things. Plato the wonder of Wonders...All men with one consent, call him Microcosmos or, The Little World. For his body is, as it were, a Magazine or Store-house of all the virtues and efficacies of all bodies, and his soul is the power and force of all living and sensible things.
