Even those who take no interest in the field of dragon naturalism have heard of Lady Trent's expedition to the inhospitable deserts of Akhia. Her discoveries there are the stuff of romantic legend, catapulting her from scholarly obscurity to worldwide fame. The details of her personal life during that time are hardly less private, having provided fodder for gossips in several countries. As is so often the case in the career of this illustrious woman, the public story is far from complete. In this, the fourth volume of her memoirs, Lady Trent relates how she acquired her position with the Royal Scirling Army; how foreign saboteurs imperiled both her work and her well-being; and how her determined pursuit of knowledge took her into the deepest reaches of the Labyrinth of Drakes, where the chance action of a dragon set the stage for her greatest achievement yet.… (més)

I think this was my favourite of all Lady Trent's memoirs, at least that are published so far. The fifth, and final I believe, is due out next year. It has everything I loved about the previous ones, the natural history element, the vaguely Victorian setting, the almost Heyer-like drama of manners and social acceptance, plus dragons and an awareness of what it wrong with all this sexism and racism and classism.
But also, for some reason, this story just hooked me so much more than any of the others. Maybe because I have already gotten to know the characters and watched them grow and develop over the previous few books. Maybe because I read them all relatively close to one another so there was very little "where was I again" when I first opened this book. Maybe it was just better? I'm not sure. But I really loved it.
Of course now I have made the classic mistake of having read all the published books in an unfinished series and must wait for my next meeting with Lady Trent and her dragons. Ah well, at least it is expected in 2017 so I won't be waiting too long.

A solidly entertaining story with intrigue and scientific experimentation, though very much lacking in dragons. Marie Brennan, more dragons for Book 5!!! Please and thank you. ( )

Is it really bad that the romance in a tale about heading to the desert to find dragons and special archeology related to dragons is rather a secondary concern? And that's including violence, culture shock, and a bunch of interesting action?

Maybe. Maybe not! But for such a light fare of adventure in the old style with old-style propriety concerns and a very distinctive Victorian feel, I certainly can't complain.

Another excellent book in the Memoirs of Lady Trent.

This time we get to see the Lady visit a desert in order to breed dragons for the war effort. There she meets up with an old ally, has a run in with an assassin, and meets up with her younger brother.

The action in this one is a bit less in this one, but there are more dragons. Plus we learn a good bit more about the dragon life cycles, so that's definitely a plus.

I can't wait to read the next one in the series. ( )

A lot of coincidences here - but also a lot of very interesting dragon information, a tangle of politics (were they always a distraction, or was the initial attempt serious?), complicated cultural stuff, and some very happy events. Two, at least - major changes for Isabel and for the world (that part of the world that's interested in Draconeans, at least. "Wonderful things."). ( )

I suspect a percentage of my readership will see the title of this volume and expect the entirety of what is contained herein to be devoted to a certain discovery that took place in the Labyrinth of Drakes. (Preface)
There is very little pleasure in being snubbed over a task for which one is well qualified.
