Laurence Dalziel is worn down and washed up, and for him, the BDSM scene is all played out. Six years on from his last relationship, he's pushing forty and tired of going through the motions of submission. Then he meets Toby Finch. Nineteen years old. Fearless, fierce, and vulnerable. Everything Laurie can't remember being.Toby doesn't know who he wants to be or what he wants to do. But he knows, with all the certainty of youth, that he wants Laurie. He wants him on his knees. He wants to make him hurt, he wants to make him beg, he wants to make him fall in love. The problem is, while Laurie will surrender his body, he won't surrender his heart. Because Toby is too young, too intense, too easy to hurt. And what they have-no matter how right it feels-can't last. It can't mean anything. It can't be real.… (més)

Toby is so adorable, but he's also a Dom. I don't know how the author was able to create his voice so perfectly: a 19-yr-old, bit awkward manboy, who can't seem to shut up, which makes him very charming; but also a Dom with very deep thoughts. A baby Dom. That's the thing I liked most: one minute he recites some very deep quote from God knows where, and the next he's musing about avocados. ;DDD The author gave this man such a unique voice, and he was able to portray the young man accurately for his age.

And then there's Laurie. At first glance he doesn't act like a sub. He's almost 40-yrs-old, so there's a big age gap. He's tired of the whole club scene. And the other thing I really liked: These men didn't fit into the boxes. A dom and a sub are expected to act a certain way, to follow certain rules. But Toby and Laurie were outside of these rules, not because they thought that they're better than anyone else, but they just didn't feel like they belonged, or that anyone would get them. So they set their own rules, which.... well they didn't have rules, they just did what they liked, and what would please the other. Yes, they have a dom/sub relationship, but it's all murky, not traditional at all.

The writing is just fabulous and spectacular. The descriptions, the words the author uses. Beautiful.
Dual POV. Laurie is first person past tense, Toby present tense. I'm not sure why authors do that sometimes. But I liked both, it fit their personalities.

Let me quote Tanya Chris, who recommended this book recently in one of her giveaway post: "This book is more than a hot, romantic tale of two kinky guys finding each other and falling in love. It’s a literary masterpiece—an absolute manual on how to write distinct voices—that transcends the genre with its cultural and literary references. "

Couldn't have said it better!
Highly recommended! ( )

By all rights, I should not like this book. On paper, it features a "my parents" size age gap, BDSM with hefty doses of humiliation. Basically, things I can see not finding romantic.

Some romances are ones where you want one or both characters for yourself. Some are those that you just want the characters to find love with each other. Hall is a master at the second. Here is done with a style that subverts convention as usual and immerses you in a BDSM relationship that mimics the vulnerability and stages to love itself, not to mention relationships. And there's the fact that there's no one, none that I recall anyway, can write a pretty normal scene that creates a conflict that has ability to flay me. To put me in pieces... And then sew me back again. there's just these quiet assertions of the horrible things we do for love, for each other, and for self-preservation.

you promised you wouldn't do this again, but you're still doing it. You're just doing it a different way. So stop pretending I could just walk away and it wouldn't mean anything to you. Stop pretending it's all all about me and what I want. Stop pretending this isn't real. Just stop fucking pretending. Because you're here too."

On paper, I don't like it. BDSM, particularly the manifestations used here typically doesn't work for me. But if I've said it once, I've said it a bunch-there's no doomed plots, just less skilled execution. There's a chapter in this book that's so exquisitely horrifying and painful that the conclusion of it had me sobbing with relief, and joy. The opening tells us so so much in just a few paragraphs. In other words, this book made it so I could see the beauty in Laurie kneeling and the triumph in Toby's power.

What even is this book? My only answer that doesn't come up short is it's brilliant. ( )

I wouldn’t normally read something like this but I love the author’s writing style. This is a beautiful story. It’s a much more realistic depiction of a BDSM relationship than the usual tripe (aka 50 Shades of grey).

The age difference may bother some people but I e always believed the cliché that “age is just a number”.

Laurie and Toby are well written - and even though I felt as though I was just getting to know them when the book ended - I already cared about them

Lovely! ( )

Gawd! The audio pulled at the heartstrings of my heart. It was gorgeous, every word, every gasp, every emotion, unbelievably transmitted by Paul Berton and John Hartley's narration.
I was absolutely spellbound by the two narrators.
However the pianist cannot sing without the written symphony. Never have I ever thought I'll read a BDSM story so beautifully written it sounded like poetry.

5 stars for the audio
4.5 stars for the book

Thank you very much to all my dear friends who have recommended this book. I adored it! ( )
