I was greatly surprised by this book. Due to the cover I was expecting a medieval romance, but was pleasantly amazed to discover a story that appeared to be set in the future, but had medieval traits. It was far removed from a romance as well. It was a story about learning. Learning your own strengths and beliefs. Helping and supporting others. The stories of Donald and Philip do come together eventually, although I found that Philips story was a little vague at times and I still not sure of its importance, apart from a coming of age tale. This is not normally the sort of book that I read, but got so caught up in the plot that I would have finished it in one long day of reading had my battery not lost power. A well crafted tale. Highly recommend.

This story is The Stonegate Sword, a lovingly crafted, gorgeous read by Harry James Fox. The perfect juxtaposition of classic fantasy, romance, a smidge of science fiction, and a hearty dash of religion fill these pages. They all coexist beautifully, and come together to tell a story that will appeal to you across every single chapter. Your biggest disappointment is sure to be that Fox doesn’t have his own series to his name yet.

Book is well written, and the author shows his command of the English language well. It also has an obvious Christian influence, in a way that is refreshing but not heavy-handed. It is obvious the author researched heavily into cavalry warfare from Medieval times, and the book “feels” very real. It is not a short read, but is worth the effort and sets up well for a sequel.

This book is a very fun ride...
It takes Don, the main character, quite a while to be transformed from a scholar [lore-man] to a warrior. He meets a girl he’s smitten with. She’s kidnapped and he goes to save her. In the midst of that he meets a believer who rubs him the wrong way—though she’s obviously taken with him. Eventually, the tale is primarily a military one, culturally. Once the boys (there are two of them) have arrived in the Haven, the story turns to warfare almost exclusively. There’s not a lot of gory detail and the battle and campaigns are well-done. Much of the suspense comes from how much of the old technology can be made ready for use. There’s not much left of that. There are many twists, and the action is compelling.

I loved The Stonegate Sword! This is all you really need to know. I'm going to tell you about the accurate portrayal of the characters. I'm going to tell you about the very realistic feel of this fictional world, a world that feels so real you are drawn into it, not just reading about it. It's probably not everyone's type of book, but it is my type and I will tell you why. Harry James Fox has created a post apocalyptic America where, although life is hard and evil abounds, people are still good and good ultimately triumphs.

Fox’s novel is very well written. He has a keen eye for detail in everything from describing a character’s physical appearance, to the surrounding landscape, to the sounds of battle. This skill allows the reader to easily escape into the world he has created.
