The land of Terre d'Ange is a place of unsurpassing beauty and grace. It is said that angels found the land and saw it was good ... and the ensuing race that rose from the seed of angels and men live by one simple rule: Love as thou wilt. Phedre no Delaunay is a young woman who was born with a scarlet mote in her left eye. Sold into indentured servitude as a child, her bond is purchased by Anafiel Delaunay, a nobleman with a very special mission ... and the first one to recognize who and what she is: one pricked by Kushiel's Dart, chosen to forever experience pain and pleasure as one. Phedre is trained equally in the courtly arts and the talents of the bedchamber, but, above all, the ability to observe, remember, and analyze. Almost as talented a spy as she is courtesan, Phedre stumbles upon a plot that threatens the very foundation of her homeland. Treachery sets her on her path; love and honor goad her further. And in the doing, it will take her to the edge of despair ... and beyond. Hateful friend, loving enemy, beloved assassin; they can all wear the same glittering mask in this world, and Phedre will get but one chance to save all that she hold dear. Set in a world of cunning poets, deadly courtiers, heroic traitors, and a truly Machiavellian villainess, this is a novel of grandeur, lusuriance, sacrifice, betrayal, and deeply laid conspiracies.… (més)

Just couldn't get into it. ( )

Sweepingly epic, sensual, romantic, erotic, and a hell of a good read. I actually bought this book 5 years ago (when I bought Harry Potter #5), and it's a shame I waited this long to finally read it. It seems like the epic books I've read recently (this, Cryptonomicon, Foucault's Pendulum) have been the best and brightest of my collection, easily outpacing everything else I pick up. It makes me want to read them all the more, now, which is great considering I have the two other books in this trilogy, as well as any number of huge and imposing books waiting in the wings. ( )

[Audiobook version]

First I will issue a general warning. I do not recommend reading/listening to this book if you are in the hospital recovering from surgery, tethered to an IV stand by lots of tubes. This is because at about chapter 38 or 39 there will come a moment when you may want to leap out of bed/thrash in your bed in a fit of "Oh god damn you s.o.b. author / oh my god I love you glorious author" and almost pull an IV.

I'll try to keep spoilers as minimum as possible.

The narrator: I thoroughly enjoyed Anne Flosnik's job at narrating the book. Although her voice and style I feel do not work for the future Naamah books later in the Kushiel Series.

This book was recommended to me at my monthly geek Meetup group and it was pitched to me as "amazing alternate history" "the best epic fantasy of the 21st century" and "the best villain since Shakespeare's Richard the III." With that description I put it on my to-do-list. A few weeks later I found myself in the hospital so I downloaded it from Audible, fell head over heels for the book and about at chapter 39 almost pulled an IV. I haven't wanted to throw a book so hard in rage and delight since Changes (Dresden fans you know what I'm talking about).

The villain, Lady Melisande is evil. EVIL! Evil. Double chocolate fudge cake evil. Evil! She might not be Richard the III levels of evil but definitely worth of her own cheer squad. ....evil!

In broad strokes the world of Kushiel's Dart is an amazing alternate history/fantasy take on our world. For all the differences it is very much the same with subtle name changes that allows you to instantly connect with their real world analog and enhances immersion. There is political intrigue a plenty in this book. There are schemes, counter schemes and schemes within schemes that play out all the way to the very end of the book. There is also magic and the supernatural in this world. For most of the time it subtle to non-existent until its not and then it is "Oh god, oh fuck! Oh fuck! Oh fuck!"

This book have sexual content. Our protagonist is a courtesan and uses sex as part of her espionage (or counter espionage?) duties. The story is set in the nation of Terre d'Ange, a sex positive 'not France' where the motto of their faith and the nation is 'love as thou wilt'. Our protagonist is the chosen of one of the pantheon of the nation and raised and educated in a system of quasi-religious temple sex workers (its hard to explain without going into paragraph after paragraph). There are some potential issues of consent and rising children from the cradle to be sex workers (no sex until 16 if you're worried) however I personally did not take issue. There are sex scenes of a BDSM nature, they are not gratuitous and each time tidbits of information with serious political ramifications (some not immediately apparent as others) are snatched up by our protagonist. All these scenes are tasteful and on the whole the topic of sex and consent I felt was handled very well.

I know there is some discussion as to where this book should be described as romantic fantasy, or fantasy romance. I would say it is Fantasy Romance. There is romance but it is not the core of the book. Love is central to this book. Love of country, love of family, love of friends and what choices you are willing to make in pursuit of that love. What are you willing to sacrifice for your love? What are you willing to endure or subject others to in pursuit of your love?"

In summation....read this book! Now!

I read this book not long after it was published, and around the same time that I was reading Marion Zimmer Bradley, so it wasn't too much of a stretch mentally. Still, at certain points, I would stop and say to myself, "What AM I reading?!?" ( )

Overall, though, this is a really superior debut, integrating original themes, intelligent world-building, and skillful writing to an extent all too rare in today's fantasy market. It should immediately establish Carey as one of the most interesting and talented of the current crop of rising fantasy stars.

Lest anyone should suppose that I am a cuckoo's child, got on the wrong side of the blanket by lusty peasant stock and sold into indenture in a shortfallen season, I may say that I am House-born and reared in the Night Court proper, for all the good it did me.
