In their tiny, sea-beaten cottage on the north coast of Scotland, Liska and Ruth await the birth of their first child. Each passes the time by telling the baby stories, trying to pass on the lessons they've learned- tales of circuses and stargazing, selkie fishermen and domestic werewolves, child-eating witches and broken-toothed dragons. But they must keep their storytelling a secret from one another, as they've agreed to only ever tell the plain truth. So to cloak their tales, Ruth tells her stories when Liska is at work, to a background of shrieking seabirds; Liska tells hers when Ruth is asleep, with the lighthouse sweeping its steady beam through the window.… (més)

Kirsty Logan writes some really brilliant short stories. These are highly recommended. ( )

What a charming, magical, delightful book! The premise is that a couple are awaiting the birth of their child, and have promised each other that they will only tell the child truths. However, they secretly (when one parent is at work, or when the pregnant parent is sleeping) tell the unborn baby stories. Truth is contained in story, of course, but the stories themselves are not necessarily truths. The author, who is Scottish, based these stories on Scottish folklore and fairy tales. They are well crafted, engaging, and heartbreaking - just like a true fairy tale.

I must admit that while reading these stories I had a distinct desire to travel to the nearest autumnal coastline, wrap myself in a blanket, and stare out into the sea. I have yet to take this journey, but a book that can evoke such strong sensation is a rare treasure indeed. I highly recommend reading this, if you're able to track it down. ( )
