Whirlwind romances are risky, sometimes even dangerous, for several reasons. I’m not talking about the possibility of someone being an ax murderer or a closeted jewel thief. Not knowing the other person as well as you should to make a decision about a long-term relationship is bad enough, and this story shows what can happen if you jump into a relationship too quickly. Even if you seem to be a perfect fit for each other, one of the more basic life decisions, like whether or not you want to have children, can derail everything and cause a lot of emotional distress and pain.

Kent is a successful computer programmer. He comes from a big family, loves life, and is ready to settle down and have a baby. He arranges the details with a surrogate, but can’t be sure it all worked as planned. When he meets Dex he falls fast and deep. The two of them fit perfectly in all areas of life – except Kent’s aversion to exercise and Dex’s lack of interest in children. Kent is devastated to find out that the man he wants to spend his life with has no interest in children because he thinks he cannot handle them.

Dex was an only child. He is a dedicated triathlete, is a successful app designer, and when he meets Kent thinks he may have found a life partner. Then he discovers Kent wants to have children – not something Dex has ever considered. He has no exposure to kids, his own home life growing up wasn’t stellar, and what if he f*cks it all up? But he loves Kent deeply, how can he give up the most perfect man he has ever met?

These two men have very different expectations of life, but luckily some of them are based on lack of experience rather than an active aversion. Both want to be together, and it was fascinating to watch them try to avoid the issue, then gradually approach it with a new perspective. Despite the emotional tension, this is a definite feel-good book without angst and lots and lots of man-on-man loving in a great variety of locations.

If you’re looking for a sweet, romantic read about two men who come to love each other deeply, you may like this novella as much as I did. It had my full attention from beginning to end, and I loved every moment of it. A very entertaining story with a very happy ending!
