A sparkling talent makes her fiction debut with this infectious novel that combines the charming pluck of Eloise, the poignant psychological quirks of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and the page-turning spirit of Where'd You Go, Bernadette. Reclusive literary legend M. M. "Mimi" Banning has been holed up in her Bel Air mansion for years. But after falling prey to a Bernie Madoff-style ponzi scheme, she's flat broke. Now Mimi must write a new book for the first time in decades, and to ensure the timely delivery of her manuscript, her New York publisher sends an assistant to monitor her progress. The prickly Mimi reluctantly complies--with a few stipulations: No Ivy-Leaguers or English majors. Must drive, cook, tidy. Computer whiz. Good with kids. Quiet, discreet, sane. When Alice Whitley arrives at the Banning mansion, she's put to work right away--as a full-time companion to Frank, the writer's eccentric nine-year-old, a boy with the wit of Noel Coward, the wardrobe of a 1930s movie star, and very little in common with his fellow fourth-graders. As she slowly gets to know Frank, Alice becomes consumed with finding out who Frank's father is, how his gorgeous "piano teacher and itinerant male role model" Xander fits into the Banning family equation--and whether Mimi will ever finish that book. Full of heart and countless "only-in-Hollywood" moments, Be Frank with Me is a captivating and unconventional story of an unusual mother and son, and the intrepid young woman who finds herself irresistibly pulled into their unforgettable world.… (més)

I’m sad that I finished the book. I’m going to miss Frank. ( )

4.5 Could've been 5 stars, but I got a little frustrated with the characters in what is truly a delightful, fresh, ultimately unique story. Alice Whitley tells us her tale and to her credit she includes warts and all of which there are many. The prologue sets us up for a big climactic event, but first we have to learn how everyone got there. Alice is an assistant to a book publisher in NYC and when the opportunity to re-sign and release a reclusive author's next book, he sends Alice to the writer to be her "jack of all trades" until she can finish her book. M.M (Mimi) Banning has been out of the spotlight and literary world since her first book was published at age 19 and became an instant classic that has withstood the 20 or so years she has holed up in Bel Air. The main reason for her reclusiveness is her 9-year-old son, Frank, who has "issues" to put it mildly. Alice uproots her simple life to head West for however long it will take Mimi to get her book done and to be whatever Mimi needs her to be -- turns out it's a nanny/surrogate mother for Frank. Frank is never labeled with anything in the book, but he has trouble making eye contact, is completely impulsive and rather compulsive, a little violent, super-smart, though socially inept, definitely an anachronism - he dresses in movie-set outfits from the classic films he loves, is accident prone and inadvertently causes harm to home and Mom, and is thoroughly charming. Moreover, he never sleeps. Mimi has been his single parent his whole life - which explains why she has not written anything; she's exhausted. She won't tell who his father is - Hanes Fuller the handsome, empty actor she married and divorced? Xander, the hot, unreliable handyman/piano teacher who comes and goes on his own schedule? Frank is really his own entity and becomes Alice's sole occupation. Imposing a little structure on Frank and trying to keep him safe and Mimi productive is a tricky balancing act. She makes inroads for a couple months, but Mimi is a little passive-aggressive and Alice is very isolated, so when Xander turns up for a stint of piano lessons and home improvements, it is no surprise they get involved. However, the chain of events that sets in motion is completely unforeseen and leads to revelations about Mimi and also the climax of the book that threatens the precarious balance Alice achieved as well as the safety of all the characters. Frank is hands-down the show-stealer in the story and he is so sweet, but so disastrous; he provides the humor and the heart and his relationship with Alice is like a Mary Poppins scenario. She mothers him in ways Mimi just can't, but she still isn't his mother. This was a page-turner and and a heart-breaker. ( )

Loved this. Funny, heartwarming. I flew through pages. Where there is Frank, there is crazy, with a sprinkle of facts thrown in. ( )

This was so charming! The ending felt very abrupt though. Do it on audio. The narration is so good I was tempted to give the book more stars. ( )
