A sharp, funny, delightfully unhinged collection of stories set in the dark world of domesticity, American Housewife features murderous ladies who lunch, celebrity treasure hunters, and the best bra fitter south of the Mason Dixon line. Meet the women of American Housewife: they wear lipstick, pearls, and sunscreen, even when it's cloudy. They casserole. They pinwheel. They pump the salad spinner like it's a CPR dummy. And then they kill a party crasher, carefully stepping around the body to pull cookies out of the oven. These twelve irresistible stories take us from a haunted prewar Manhattan apartment building to the set of a rigged reality television show, from the unique initiation ritual of a book club to the getaway car of a pageant princess on the lam, from the gallery opening of a tinfoil artist to the fitting room of a legendary lingerie shop. Vicious, fresh, and nutty as a poisoned Goo Goo Cluster, American Housewife is an uproarious, pointed commentary on womanhood.… (més)

American Housewife: Stories de Helen Ellis (2016)

Happy Are the Happy de Yasmina Reza (BookshelfMonstrosity)
BookshelfMonstrosity: Despite the dark subjects of loneliness, despair, and sorrow covered in these short story collections, the overall effect of the satirical wit is humorous. Readers may easily relate to the character-driven vignettes, which focus on common emotional terrain.… (més)

These stories are funny, sad, and horrifying. Many of them deal with psychotic housewives who really need to get a job! Another theme running through these stories is that of a writer with some serious writer's block. I imagine that's a little tongue in cheek from the author.

I loved the email exchange from The Wainscoting War, though that did get very strange at the end. I enjoyed John Lithgow in Dumpster Diving With the Stars. Hello! Welcome to Book Club was frightening.

Which begs the question, can any of these women escape? And escape seems necessary to preserve (or cultivate) normalcy for this cast of characters. Do they even want to escape? Should I escape? How normal am I?

I liked the words of wisdom in How To Be a Grown-ass Lady and Take It From Cats.

I'm assuming Tampax didn't sue her for the final story. Hoping that in real life, they didn't have to resort to all those tactics to get a final manuscript out of Helen Ellis.

This was fun and a real quick read. I'm not much of a short story girl but these definitely entertained. ( )

I'm not nor have ever been a housewife, yet these stories feel familiar. The witty tone, the snarky female interactions, and simmering rage underneath it all is only a few steps away from my daily reality, even if I'm not a contestant on "Dumpster Diving with the Stars." Overall, this collection of stories manages to be both real and a funny, enticing escape from reality. ( )

This is a quirky collection of stories -- pleasant enough to listen to, especially because each one is read by a different narrator which makes them unique and distinct from each other. There were two main strains: New York city socialite whose apartment/real estate value is closely tied to self-worth, and southern belle whose manners are just a facade for some hard-core reality. But there is irony and humor in all -- the author is having a little fun with us, for sure. My favorite was "The Fitter", about a woman (southern) whose husband is a talented, "magical" bra fitter and she as his wife and assistant must come to terms with his occupational hazard of intimate knowledge of other women's breasts. She ultimately must come up with the best "fit" of her own. Another winner was "Dumpster Diving with the Stars" in which a washed up writer competes with other has-beens to find some worthwhile junk, but also to find a new purpose and direction in life. I also liked "Pageant Protection" about a woman who whisks away little girls competing in the beauty circuit to a relocation/witness protection program away from their "pushy mommies." There are a couple "how to" stories which have a fresh perspective written in second person. These stories are all definitely funny, but dark too, which presents something to think and talk about re: the roles of women in our post-feminist era. ( )

Loved this so much. The author’s writing is truly laugh out funny. I read this on the midnight/overnight train from Italy to Paris and due to a booking/room error (on my dear husband’s part) I got stuck bunking with an lovely (ah hem) older French lady that only spoke French ..I think she thought I was crazy because I was laughing so hard with the little light on my bunk while also trying to muffle my uncontrollable laughter that I just may have kept her up while this book kept me from losing my mind. Bonus: I now know how to get red wine out of white carpet, but I won’t spoil it here..I let Helen tell you instead. ( )

Inspired by Beyoncé, I stallion-walk to the toaster. I show my husband a burnt spot that looks like the island where we honeymooned, kiss him good-bye, and tell him what time to be home for our party.

Compliment everyone. Take a compliment. Wear sunscreen on your face and hands even when it's cloudy. Dye your gray hair black, brown or blond. Run the dishwasher half full. Have company over and serve what you want to eat. When a guest says your meat loaf looks like a football, don't tell the woman that her husband is obviously gay.
