**spoiler alert** I started this book right after ACOTAR and got sooo mad because I knew that Rhys was about to become the love interest. So I stopped reading out of spite and didn't pick it back up for A YEAR. I learned later that that was the poorest decision I have ever made because Rhysand officially won my heart in this book and I have never wished a fictional character were real more in my life. This book will forever be my comfort book. ( )

I think this book was too overhyped for me to properly enjoy it. That being said, I don't know if I would have given this book a higher rating if I had heard nothing about it before reading it. To start with what I liked: I loved the beginning, I liked the ending but there was slightly too much going on for my taste, I loved the cast of characters, and I thought [a:Sarah J. Maas|3433047|Sarah J. Maas|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1269281353p2/3433047.jpg] did an excellent job writing the romance between Feyre and Rhys ONCE THEY ACTUALLY GOT TOGETHER. which leads to what I didn't love. I hated all the pining that happened in the middle of the book. The middle of this book dragged so much in my opinion. Nothing was happening beyond the relationship between Rhys and Feyre and in some ways that's fine. Relationships need time to properly develop and I like that they weren't instantly all over each other even with the obvious attraction they felt but because this book is so long this went on for hundreds of pages and I lost interest. I think a lot of this was due to the fact that I personally do not like relationship heavy books which is obviously a critique that has less to do with the book than with my personal reading taste. This book was clearly written for an audience that likes a more romance heavy, slow burn, fantasy novel and I could absolutely see why that audience would love this. I'm just not that audience. Beyond already not being in that audience is the fact that I am also gay. Does that mean I cannot enjoy a straight love story? obviously not, I grew up with straight love stories just like everyone else and I liked some of them but I think there is some element of imagining yourself in Feyre's place and having the awesomely handsome boyfriend (the "book boyfriend" idea) that for obvious reason doesn't appeal to me.
A critique I read in a lot of reviews that had a similar rating as me was that they didn't like the way Tamlin was treated. I had no problem with the way he was treated. I thought he was a dick to Feyre. Do I think it is fair to compare him to Rhys and say that his reaction doesn't make sense because Rhys was a prisoner for longer and he wasn't a dick? No, because everyone deals with trauma differently but I think Feyre is justified with no longer wanting to be with him. If Tamlin needed time to deal with his trauma that's something he and Feyre should have discussed and he shouldn't have just continued on as if his behavior was normal.
I also read quite a lot and heard a lot about how there was so much sex in this book and there really isn't. Yes I think it probably is more sex than the average YA novel but its really just at the beginning and a little at the end, leaving hundreds of pages where there is very very little sex so if you're concerned about the amount of sex there may be, if you can make it past the first little bit, it doesn't get any worse so you should be fine. (Also, it does that thing in YA books with sex that really annoys me where the language is really vague and hand-wavy. They use terms like length, release inside me, member, etc... instead of just saying what is actually happening. Maybe it's supposed to be sexy but I hate it a lot.)
I own the next book. The ending left me intrigued enough that I will probably read it just to see what happens but I don't think I will be continuing immediately. I will probably wait at least until my school goes on summer break so that I don't feel like I'm wasting my precious free time if I end up being kind of disappointed in the book like I was in this case. I don't even know if this review is even relevant anymore. I know most people have decided by this point whether they like it or not and obviously based on the 4.7-star average this book has, I am in the minority on finding this book kind of meh. like I said, I think this book was overhyped for me. I think most likely I would have given this a three-star review in any situation but I think the difference is that if this book hadn't been so hyped I wouldn't have felt so disappointed that I didn't like it. But until next time, happy reading. ( )

Sarah J. Maas writes the perfect "new adult" fantasy novel in my opinion. Her books are fast moving, her characters are engaging, and ger storylines draw you in and won't let you go until the last page. A Court of Thorns and Roses is my favorite series she writes. Her books will always be an immediate read for me no questions asked. ( )

I still haven't finished this book, but I'm marking it as finished for now. I'm sure at some point I might listen to the ending, but I had a lot more problems with the plot conveniences and double-talk in this book as compared to the book before it. ( )
