"In the next Ruth Galloway mystery, a vision of the Virgin Mary foreshadows a string of cold-blooded murders, revealing a dark current of religious fanaticism in an old medieval town. Known as England's Nazareth, the medieval town of Little Walsingham is famous for religious apparitions. So when Ruth Galloway's druid friend Cathbad sees a woman in a white dress and a dark blue cloak standing alone in the local cemetery one night, he takes her as a vision of the Virgin Mary. But then a woman wrapped in blue cloth is found dead the next day, and Ruth's old friend Hilary, an Anglican priest, receives a series of hateful, threatening letters. Could these crimes be connected? When one of Hilary's fellow female priests is murdered just before Little Walsingham's annual Good Friday Passion Play, Ruth, Cathbad, and DCI Harry Nelson must team up to find the killer before he strikes again"--… (més)

A good one, humorously written. Interesting to study the way she dies dialogue and thought interspersed

Another entry in the series that sees nelson having to deal with a murder of a beautiful blonde in Walsingham. There's a shrine to the Virgin Mary there and Cathbad, who is house sitting for a waistcoat wearer, at first wondered if the person he saw was a vision of Our Lady. Ruth gets involved when someone she was at university with, and is now a woman priest, is visiting Walsingham on a course and has been receiving threatening letters. Are these related or is is just co-incidence? There's a whole lot going on in here and at times it seems that the police are baffled. There is also some progression in the Tim/Michelle story, although I hope that the threatened action doesn't take place - Tim's too interesting a character for that. ( )

I received an advance copy of this novel from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I have been following this fantastic series since the first installment. It has gotten to the point that I am almost as interested to see what is going on in the characters’ lives as I am in the current mystery. This particular installment focuses mainly on Nelson and Ruth, whose relationship is getting even more complicated. I must say that anyone thinking of reading this book should certainly buy it, but get the rest of the series and read it in order. While the individual mysteries are stand-alone stories, the underlying drama of the characters and their lives is really half the fun and you would miss that if you read them out of order. Also, the books sometimes contain spoilers for the earlier stories.

The Woman in Blue deals with a series of murders connected with Easter celebrations in a small town that was once a Catholic stronghold until the churches were confiscated by Henry VIII—which apparently still rankles and shapes the collective consciousness. The Catholic and Anglican traditions meld so that even pagans and non-believers get caught up in the pageantry but there is always an undercurrent of tension and there are whispers of a curse placed centuries ago by the displaced medieval monks. With religious fervor sometimes comes obsessions and resistance to change, sometimes violent resistance. And sometimes murder.

4 stars.

I wanted more archeology. And more Cathbad. What this story needs is more Cathbad. (My apologies to Christopher Walken.)

I'm not really thrilled w/ the narration of this book: It seems as if there is a 3rd person commentator, while the characters speak for themselves, and I do not see the point of that.

I do remember reading something else from this series and not liking it or the characters, so I'm thinking the same with this book. Ah, the cop who had an affair & the woman got pregnant & kept the baby, now is angry at his wife as she isn't having an affair, but does love her husband's colleague.

A woman is killed in the graveyard after cleaning a particular grave; the cop's wife who looks exactly like the dead woman is also attacked, but survives; then a 3rd woman looking like the other two is also found murdered in the graveyard....

I skipped most of the book to the interesting parts & to find out who killed the women & why. ( )

Is the woman Cathbad sees in a graveyard in Walsingham a vision of the Virgin Mary or a real woman who is found murdered nearby the next morning? And is there a connection with the anonymous letters received by a woman priest friend of Ruth's?

I'm trying to remember what the other murder mystery I read set in and around Walsingham was called, which was more sympathetic to the devotees there. This was a good mystery, with some good misleading clues, but had more of an outsider's rather condescending viewpoint. ( )

Weep, weep, O Walsingham,
