Wow. Just wow. Impossible to put into words my thoughts about her story of survival, perseverance, and ultimately her victorious journey to freedom. I was always aware of the Hermit Kingdom and the murderous antics of the dictators' family; but never had the story of the regime's cruelty driven home as well as Ms. Park has done. Can only pray that someday North Korea will be free of the despots that rule. ( )

This is a powerful memoir of a young girl and her mother who escaped North Korea. Their path from North Korea through China, Mongolia and South Korea was harrowing. The author is courageous in sharing the details of her ordeal. I commend her for her work. ( )

At a mere 21 years, Yeon-Mi Park has lived a life that most of us could never even begin to fathom. She's an inspiration and I'm so glad that she has become a voice for people who do not have a voice of their own. A remarkable story, highly recommended. ( )

I have read one previous memoir of a North Korean refugee and she acknowledges him in her own account.
Their stories differ in both gender perspective and in other aspects. He was in the employ of the Kim family as a poet where she comes from more humble origins, a small city on the banks of the Yalu River, which borders North Korea and China. She tells the reader about her early years when, by North Korean standards they were reasonably comfortable, but her father saw opportunities to make more money through the black market by accessing goods for trade from China. This meant he travelled a great deal and her mother was the main stay for she and her older sister. Eventually the father is imprisoned and the family fall on hard times - starvation and isolation because of his lowered status. It is against the backdrop of the famine in North Korea that the daughters and mother plan their escape. The father has been released from prison as he is unwell but the women go ahead with their plans. Yeonmi was only 13 years old at the time.Their journey through China is horrific. They are raped and become victims of people trafficking. They eventually are reunited with the father but he is diagnosed with terminal cancer and dies. They escape with the aid of Christian missionaries through Mongolia to South Korea.
Their story is one of incredible human endurance and determination to survive. As this book was published in 2015, I Googled Yeonmi to discover that she is now happily married with a young son. She continues to advocate for repressed people worldwide.
It certainly puts our own lives in perspective even in these straitened times. ( )
