After the events of the Fourth Trial, Martial soldiers hunt the two fugitives as they flee the city of Serra and undertake a perilous journey through the heart of the Empire.Laia is determined to break into Kauf - the Empire's most secure and dangerous prison - to save her brother, who is the key to the Scholars' survival. And Elias is determined to help Laia succeed, even if it means giving up his last chance at freedom. But dark forces, human and otherworldly, work against Laia and Elias. The pair must fight every step of the way to outsmart their enemies: the bloodthirsty Emperor Marcus, the merciless Commandant, the sadistic Warden of Kauf, and, most heartbreaking of all, Helene - Elias's former friend and the Empire's newest Blood Shrike. Laia was the salvation that Elias needed and now it is time for Elias to return the favor. He is determined to help her break her brother out of Kauf prison. They have many demons to face along their path, some human and some not. Even Helene, Elia's best friend, is forced to hunt them down. In the first book, An Ember in the Ashes, the story is told from 2 perspectives, Laia and Elias, but in this book it is told from 3, Laia, Elias, and now Helene. I find it really interesting to see her side of all of this as well. ( )

Seems like trauma/violence porn at some points (or maybe it’s the realities of a cruel regime). Elias (and Helene, the Scholar people), in particular, can't seem to catch a break. But it's the character connection/interaction between Elias and Helene that keeps me hooked.

I never would’ve dreamt of it, but I find Helene the most interesting. She cannot kill Elias and yet she must; the Commandant is playing chess with her, her soldiers don’t respect her, and her family has sworn allegiance to Marcus, a certified butthole, fighting his own demons. I don’t dislike Laia, but I feel like I’m just being told she’s brave/different now. But I’m not really seeing it. her invisibility power does sound like it could be dope now that she’s mastered it.

I also loved that Elias got to see his family again.

There are some parts I enjoy and others I don’t like. As far as interest, it’s like 4 – 5 stars, but I don’t know if I like how some of the heavier elements are handled. But I can’t put this series down either, so onto book 3 I go.

TW: genocide, enslavement, prison torture, seizures, death, child abuse

Ending thoughts (major spoilers): it feels like Helene gained this whole family overnight. I don’t remember them being mentioned in the first book much, if at all.

I was surprised when Laia slept with Keenan because most books have the female lead “untouched” by no one other than the LI, even during a love triangle.

I liked that the Scholar people played a huge role in their own escape. It wasn’t like Elias was the chosen “savior” or something. Maybe he brought morale up, but they also helped themselves. It’s always iffy when the savior of a people is an outsider, but I think the story avoided that.

Also, loved that he died. You don’t expect the hero to die in these stories, even if he does cheat death for a few pages more.

The whole Keenan-Jinn felt majorly cheesy. I thought he was just helping the warden because they had information on a family member of his who wasn't killed.

2018 Spring:

I continue to be so in love with this universe and all the steps all the characters are taking it. I love the new things we are learning about our two main characters, and I deeply appreciate that we are watching Helene's journey as well. I am waiting with such impatience for the next novel in this gorgeous setting. ( )

As I thought after finishing An Ember in the Ashes, I couldn’t read any other book till I binged this series and so I started this sequel immediately. And just like the first book, this was almost a single sitting read because I couldn’t put it down at all.

I felt the pacing of the book slowed down a little this time; not that it’s any less tense or intense, just more of a slow journey. The twists and turns are also much more pronounced, and I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop all the time. And as I was reading quite fast, I didn’t stop to think of what was coming, so every reveal was very surprising and I really enjoyed the experience. The world is still pretty bleak and hopeless, and I can’t even imagine what more horrors are in store in the next book.

This time, I really can’t choose whom I liked more. Laia is as determined as ever to get her brother out of the prison, but seeing her fight and suffer and see the destruction of her loved ones and lose confidence in herself, but also finding her strength once more, was great to read about and I admired her so much. Elias is more tortured than ever, but I totally did not see the turn his story took and I’m quite perplexed with what’s gonna happen next with him. Everyone seems to take advantage of his empathy but I hope it’ll always prove to be his strength. Helene on the other hand is put to every test possible and I’m amazed at her will power and loyalty that she still holds on. She is fighting on all sides while trying to keep herself safe and sane, and after what happened towards the end, I’m even more curious to see how she changes and what destruction she will cause to her enemies.

In the end, this was as engaging as the previous book and I’m so glad I got to read the books back to back. And right now, I’m rushing to pick up the next one because I can’t wait. ( )

Elias and Laia are the two most wanted people in the Empire. Fleeing the main city, the evil Commandant, new Emperor Marcus, and his sworn enforcer, Blood Shrike Helene, Elias and Laia have a single goal: to rescue Laia's brother Darin from the fortress Kauf Prison, with the hope that his skills can help the plight of the Scholars. Something terrible happens in their daring escape, slowing the pair down, allowing them to be joined by past allies. The book moved along at a good pace, even with the switching POVs, and the characters were strong although I did not care for Laia's waffling over whether she wanted Elias or Keenan. In a similar vein, I found Helene's feelings not very consistent either. Lots of murder and mayhem, especially by the psychotic Commandant. ( )
