If you are a Lion Witch and Wardrobe fan then you’ve got plenty of time to pick up this Advent devotional. Heidi’s devotional is set up to read the book at the same time. There were certain points I wanted more of Lewis’ quotes or even passage sections within the devotional; however, Heidi was wise enough to let the reader know the skirt of the copyright law on this one; it goes quite long. The devotions are short, scripturally pertinent, applicable, and filled with brief insights into the mind of Lewis and Narnia. Recommended: Advent devotional; Narnia fans **This was a review copy provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.** Advent in Narnia will please any Narnia fan and others, too. What a unique way to prepare for Christ's birth! The author mixes in both Narnia characters and scripture to enlighten the season. The book holds twenty-eight devotions with reflection questions. I read this by myself but will enjoy using it in the future with my grandson and family as Narnia becomes real to him. Since my copy is an e-book I look forward to purchasing the hardbound edition. It is lovely and will complement my Christmas collection. I am thankful to NetGalley for this reading and reviewing opportunity. My views and honest opinions are my own. Advent in Narnia by Heidi Haverkamp offers a refreshing, new perspective for Advent combining the Chronicles of Narnia (specifically The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe) along with the traditional focus of Advent for the season. It is a creative and unique concept and one the author states is to "... my purpose for writing this book is not to help you to know Narnia better but to know God better." The chapters are short, engaging and insightful. They start with a Biblical quote, move on to the message and end with questions for reflections. The author provides prompts for each chapter letting you know what portion of the book to read. She also suggests the option of following along with the movie and has added a wonderful list at the back of the book (Appendix A) of the different versions that have been made. At the end, Ms. Haverkamp offers ideals for a 'Narnia night for Families' that can be for church gathering or scaled down to an individual family night. She also offers recommendations regarding individual study, group and family study as well. Overall, the author's love of God and for The Chronicles of Narnia come shining though each page and I highly recommend this book! I'd like to finish off this post with a favorite quote from this book ~ "Advent is a time to step into a world of imagination and wonder." Thank you to Westminster John Knox Press and Edelweiss for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an honest review. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya
"Walking into Advent can be like walking through the wardrobe." With its enchanting themes of snow and cold, light and darkness, meals and gifts, temptation and sin, forgiveness and hope--and even an appearance by Father Christmas--C. S. Lewis's The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe fits naturally into the Advent season. As the reader seeks a storied king and anticipates the glorious coming of Christmas, these twenty-eight devotions alternate between Scripture and passages from the novel to prompt meditation on Advent themes. Each devotion also includes questions for reflection. The book also provides several resources for churches, including four sessions for small group discussion and ideas for creating a "Narnia Night" for families. Readers will ultimately come to know God better while journeying through Narnia. No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |

I love Narnia and when this came up for offer I jumped at the chance immediately. I've already started raving about this book to my mother and I'm sure I'll end up raving to others about it, too. It's written to follow the season of Advent and a small group studying The Lion, The Witch and The Warddrobe with matching scripture.
This book handles small chapters taking about the clever, subtle ways that Lewis wrote Christianity, the marvel, the magic, and the myth into his novel, his characters, the choices they make. The chapters parallel and match each other, so a short excerpt section/topic/character from the book and then a matching piece from scripture. The Chapters are divided by Advent weeks, and then the sections inside are short (rarely more than two pages each), the questions are deep for evoking discussions.
There are directions for how to throw A Narnia Day at the end, too, for the Discussion Group or a whole church. There are activities and there are recipes. I really loved this and think it would be a great recourse. ( )
