Army of Darkness: Ash Gets Hitched - Steve Niles
I didn't really care if Ash got hitched or not, and while this promised a build up to a pretty epic finale, I found the final fight to be somewhat anti-climatic.
I did like some things, however. One star alone for Jae Lee's covers, because Jae Lee, as some of you may remember, illustrated Paul Jenkins' run on Inhumans, and it was glorious and gorgeous art.
And he doesn't let down here. I also really liked the cover gallery at the end, and while it's nice that they added in a script to an issue - one - at the end, I don't particularly enjoy reading them so I didn't. After all, I'd already read the issue itself, and I've read enough of the original script pages for comics to have a general idea of them. If I'd been interested in that, I would have bought a book of scripts, or asked for them, instead of buying the graphic novel where I look forward to reading the story accompanied by art.
I guess I feel defensive because I feel as if should read every single word, but my eyes start to glaze over. I guess I just don't get the appeal. The one exception to this rule has been Morrison's silent issue of New X-Men in the omnibus: I read that, because I was interested in how he described an issue that would use no dialogue at all.
Which has nothing to do with this graphic novel, in which I felt like the script was an addition to pad this to over a hundred pages. I started reading it and then gave up, but I like that they have it there for the people who are interested in reading it. It's nice, and the padding is appreciated because this is a shorter volume. It's nice to get additional material, that someone took the time to put that together so I feel like I'm getting my money's worth - although I would be anyway, and more, since I got this via Humble Bundle.
And I don't know why I'm rambling so much right now. Let's get back to it: I liked a lot of the dialogue here. I haven't watched any of the movies lately, but from what I remember, this captures a lot of the irreverence in them, particularly Ash.
I liked one scene in particular, although it's meant to be a surprise for one character, and the audience, so I won't spoil it.
Overall, I don't regret reading this, I just don't see myself reading it again any time soon. Or ever. ( )
