The award-winning New York Times bestseller about the extraordinary things that can happen when we harness the power of both the brain and the heart   Growing up in the high desert of California, Jim Doty was poor, with an alcoholic father and a mother chronically depressed and paralyzed by a stroke. Today he is the director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE) at Stanford University, of which the Dalai Lama is a founding benefactor. But back then his life was at a dead end until at twelve he wandered into a magic shop looking for a plastic thumb. Instead he met Ruth, a woman who taught him a series of exercises to ease his own suffering and manifest his greatest desires. Her final mandate was that he keep his heart open and teach these techniques to others. She gave him his first glimpse of the unique relationship between the brain and the heart.   Doty would go on to put Ruth's practices to work with extraordinary results--power and wealth that he could only imagine as a twelve-year-old, riding his orange Sting-Ray bike. But he neglects Ruth's most important lesson, to keep his heart open, with disastrous results--until he has the opportunity to make a spectacular charitable contribution that will virtually ruin him. Part memoir, part science, part inspiration, and part practical instruction, Into the Magic Shop shows us how we can fundamentally change our lives by first changing our brains and our hearts.  … (més)

Change your brain, change your life. This inspiring book tells you how.

I was very impressed with this neurosurgeon's experience and use of meditation and mindfulness for his work and life. The book read like a story of fiction, but is actually an enjoyable narration of his life of the learning and use of meditation. I would recommend this book. ( )

I picked this book up with curiosity: how a neurosurgeon would write about magic. He starts off saying: "There's a certain sound the scalp makes when it's being ripped off of a skull...like a large piece of Velcro tearing about from its source." He immediately got my attention and continued to describe what it was like to operate on someone that desperately needed his help to survive.

Then he backed up and talked about his childhood with an alcoholic father, a depressed mother, a frightened brother and very little money if any to pay rent. While bike riding in the neighborhood area one summer, he found a magic shop and went inside. This changed his life. The owner's mother happened to be visiting and shared with him over a number of days how to meditate and see the world differently. It obviously worked for him as he's now a noted physician, scientist and donor of charities internationally.

He shares his story to help others. I think sometimes these books fall into our hands when we need them the most providing some sort of motivation in life.

I don't really usually post such reviews or critiques about the movies or books that I watch or read. It's very rare of me to do such things because I AM SUCH A LAZY ASS and no one will interact with it anyways.

But this book made me do this because I am pretty sure that EVERYONE will understand this, relate to this, and will make you see a MAGICAL thing in your life. Although some of you may know that this was a book that inspired BTS to compose the song "Magic Shop", but trust me, THIS ISN'T A BTS RELATED BOOK. THE BOOK WAS THE ONE THAT INSPIRED BTS.

I am tagging some of my friends whom I think will definitely appreciate the book because they'll be able to relate to the message.

I'll try to make this brief to avoid too much spoiler as well.

⭒☆━━━━━━━ ENTERING MAGIC SHOP ━━━━━━━━☆⭒

This book is a story about a boy named Jim who wandered inside a magic shop and met a girl who he didn't know yet, will change his perspective in life forever. She taught him a very unusual but very powerful magic that'll help him manifest things he always wanted to happen.

3 magic things:
1. Relaxing the body - basically instructs you to release everything and be calm. once you practiced relaxing your body, it'll help you relax your mind as well. you need to relax both of them whatever the situation is. whether you're mad, sad or even happy. it may be hard but you got to trust the process.

"There are a lot of things in life we can’t control. It’s hard, especially when you’re a child, to feel like you have control over anything. Like you can change anything. But you can control your body and you can control your mind. That might sound like a lot, but it’s very powerful. It can change everything."

2. Calming your mind - we all know how busy our brain is. our brain reacts to every single thing we do. we think a lot. we always hear voices in our head that tells us what to do, who makes you do undecided things, who makes us doubt, and gives ourselves negative feedbacks. but what we don't know is that the voices inside your head ARE NOT YOU. The real you is the one the person who listens to those voices. So when you try to clear your mind, empty your mind, calm your mind, you're literally turning off the voices inside your head that most of the time, bothers you. It will actually help you control your mind to have some positive effects which are making you calm, think better, be attentive, and happier.

There are few ways on emptying your mind. / shutting down the voices.
* focus on your calm breathing.. DO NOT THINK ABOUT THINKING NOTHING. Just focus on your breathing.
* stare at a candle flame. focus on every light it has. dark zone (the lowest part), middle zone (blue), and the outermost zone (yellow).
* chant your mantra. you can use the easiest, comfortable two words for you. it doesn't matter what it is. what matter is listening to your own chant until you can't think of anything else except that two magical words. don't chant fast. do it slowly..

Once you have mastered controlling your mind, you can have anything you want. You can clearly think of ways how you'll be able to achieve those things. You can see some photos attached for ways on how to manifest them.

3. Opening the heart - Jim, the boy who found the magic shop, had years of hard time understanding this method. It took time for him to see and realise that he haven't really opened his heart yet. He only realised it when his wonderful, extremely wealthy lifestyle vanished. When he realised that money won't really bring you total happiness.

"Each of us in our lives experiences situations that cause pain. I call them wounds of the heart. If you ignore them, they won’t heal.
But sometimes, when our hearts are wounded, that’s when they open. Frequently, it is the wounds of the heart that give us to greatest opportunity to grow. Difficult situations. Magic gift."

You need to find the compass of your heart. Compass gives you direction. Finding the compass of the heart means the heart will give the brain a direction on what is the right thing for you to do. Both our hearts and brain can send signals to each other. Brain can give rational decisions to the heart and the heart gives relational.

"Both our thoughts and feelings can be both powerful, but a strong emotion can silence a thought."

"The heart has an intelligence of its own, and if we learn from it we will know that we keep what we have by giving it away. If we want to be happy, we make others happy. If we want love, we have to give love. If want joy, we have to make others joyful. If we want forgiveness, we should forgive others (even if they weren't even sorry). If we want peace, we have to create it in the world around us. If we want to be healed, we have to heal others too."

Now, after telling you the 3 magical things that can happen to your life, there are few parts that made me too emotional. Parts that aren't related to the magic shop. You'll know once you've read it. And if it didn't touch you, the 3rd magical thing didn't work yet.

There may be a lot of medical terms mentioned but you will still be able to understand it as the author simplified his words. You can still google them if you have trouble understanding the point.

There's also a part where he mentioned that they usually play classical music during operation because

"most surgeons play music in the operating room-it can calm and soothe the patient or focus and energize the surgical team."

which reminds me of a movie (book based) I've watched/read way back 2013(?). Titled "If I Stay". There was a scene where the girl's spirit was stuck in the hospital she was confined in. When she was ready to let go of herself, her boyfriend (staying beside her unconscious body) played & let her listen to her favourite cello piece. She came back and stayed.

I know it has nothing to do with the operating, but it still has connection. lol.

꘎♡━━━━━━━ LEAVING MAGIC SHOP ━━━━━━━━♡꘎

I hope by stating the 3 magical things, helps you on focusing to your goal and doing what's right.

WHERE TO BUY/DOWNLOAD THE BOOK?
- I am not sure if bookstores has stocks, but you can go to a FULLY BOOKED branch near you, ask for the availability. If unavailable, you can make a reservation once that branch restocked. It cost P816.
- for a PDF version, I haven't seen one online yet. I'm sorry.

Thank you fo reading.

The title/concept and first chapter of this book set my expectations very high -- 4 or 5 star for sure. Unfortunately, it then turned to a mix of pointless filter, inanity, and really nothing else. Doty could have written an amazing magazine article or a TED talk or YouTube presentation or something, but instead delivered a mediocre and not-worth-reading book, which is sad, because he seems like he is probably an interesting person with a lot of good experiences.
